There’s a good chance I’ll be relocating to the Monterey, Ca. area to attend graduate school starting in August. While I won’t have a lot of time for training, I’m interested in connecting with the local triathlon and running scene and would naturally be happy to meet fellow Slowtwitchers.
Can anyone tell me about the “scene” in that area? I know there’s a major annual tri in the Triathlon at Pacific Grove, as well as the Big Sur Marathon. How about tri clubs and group activities? What’s the area like for training? And for those not living in that area but who might have attended graduate school recently, were you able to continue training while studying full time?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Hi Aeromon,
I do 90% of my races in the Monterey Bay area. Plenty of races, and organizations, great race atmosphere! Check

I can’t tell you about the tri scene in Monterey but I can tell you it is a fantastic place. I was a marketing rep in that area for 6 years and I loved it. One of the most beautiful places on this planet. There are hundreds of miles of 2 lane roads through the farm country (strawberries and artichokes) to ride. There are trails and open space to run along the bay or hills. I don’t know about the pools down there but some areas of the bay are quite protected and calm. If the fog comes in you can go over the hill to Salinas and ride the valley or go down to the Carmel valley.
Good luck.
Dave
Thanks you guys.
I’m likely headed to the Monterey Institute of International Studies for a master’s in teaching foreign language.
I don’t feel compelled to maintain triathlon training, but I am keen on running as much as possible while possibly commuting by bike to/from school. Salinas is one place I’d consider living to save on rent.
There is a great group of triathletes in Monterery/Seaside. When you get there, I can hook you up. Some great riding in that area.
