Anybody done this race in Ohio that cares to give a critque about it? I’m looking at maybe getting an early 1/2 to start the season.
You don’t necessarily HAVE to do it as part of the Triple T, right?
Thanks in advance.

I am doing it this year. You do not have to do it as part of the TTT. I think Gordo said it may be the toughest half he has ever done. Lots of hills on the bike, lots of hills on the run.
I am probably doing this race as well. I am worried about doing the whole TTT.
I did the race last year and Eric is right, you don’t have to do the series to do the race.
The course is incredibly hard. The bike is two loops. There is one big climb about 3 miles into the course followed by rolling hills the entire way. You ride through dense beautiful forest. The run is two times out and back. The course is .5 miles flat, 2 mile rolling hills gaining about 1000ft i think, .5miles down hill. 80% of the run is under shade. Last year, it was humid and about 95 degrees by noon.
There arent that many people doing the open race. Its a beautiful and incredibly hard race. I did another half 2 months later and was 40 minutes faster.
I did it last year as part of the TTT.
Swim is in a smaller lake not the ocean so there won’t be any big waves or surf.
Bike is challenging, 2 loops of the course with a 500 foot climb around 5-7% and another climb of 400 feet that’s not as steep. After that, a couple of bumps then into it again.
Road quality is pretty good as I remember.
The run starts out flat for half a mile then up for 2 miles and 300 feet then down 200 feet in half a mile. Turn around and run back, then do it again.
The run is on some fire roads, not quite gravel, not quite a trail but not on asphalt.
As someone said there is a lot of shade on the bike and run and that makes a big difference with your body temp.

I did it in '04. You don’t have to do the TTT. Great low key start of season race. If you sign up early you can’t beat the price. Nice location. Bike is somewhat hard and the run (on a fire road ) rewards those who pace the bike well.
Great race - was a nice write up by Gordo a few years back as was mentioned. He was humbled. Good early season training, but you won’t be PRing at this race. Fun to see all the TripleT competitors on course as well, slogging along (easily recognized by the same DeSoto jersey they all wear).
Might want to consider bringing a road bike vs. a tri bike and at least a 25 rear (assuming a 39 small front).
