Great post Doctor.
I’m a displaced native of Bloomington and love the movie, Little 500, Hilly Hundred and everything else that makes B-town a great cycling community.
Thanks for the post and bringing back some great memories.
BTW - I was in elementary school when they filmed the movie and recall film crews going to the quarry behind our school to film. What a great movie for the community.
My daughter graduated from IU last year and raced in the Little 500 twice. I have attended the race for the last 4 years. I’m bummed that I will not be able to make it this year. Last year was pretty special. Both my daughter and I met then presidential candidate Barack Obama at the Women’s race on Friday and I brought something special back home.

Awesome. I’ve been to Bloomington, visited your shop, and shook your hand. It was one of the highlights of my three years spent on the road.

Red bar tape and chain…Chi Omega? Just a shot in the dark.
I’m a current graduate student at IU…watched my first Little 500 live last year. Will be at a restaurant/bar in Richmond VA watching the race this year b/c of Du Nats.
I guess this is where I get to post my annual … I WAS IN THE MOVIE post. My wife and I were in the crowd the day they filmed the big race. I wore a really obnoxious yellow and black rugby jersey (looked like John Belushi in one of the SNL bee skits … only I was skinny and looked nothing like John Belushi). I’ve played the race crowd scenes frame-by-frame on a huge plasma TV and have never spotted either my wife or me. But we were there. I was also in the cafeteria at the student union when the fight scene was filmed. Haven’t spotted me there, either.
My annual trivia post about the movie. They were very disappointed in the student turnout to recreate the race. They had to bunch us up and move us around the stadium to get a crowd into all the various camera angles. I never understood why they did it on a weekday when classes were going on. I’m sure that was part of the problem.
My wife and I weren’t married then. We were in grad school and had just moved up there from Tulsa. I wasn’t into cycling at all, but we had two undergrad roommates who raced for one of the frats. They did their thing and we did ours. Theirs mostly involved cycling. Ours mostly involved studies and various vices. I can’t even remember their names. It would be funny to learn if they are as gonzo crazy about cycling now as I am. The whole IU/Breaking Away thing had nothing to do with how I found my way to cycling. Just an odd coincidence.
