Lionel Sanders - Watch Out

The run record seems to be all over the place.

Agreed. There are a whole bunch of times now in the 2:35 - 2:39 range that all make a claim at being the “fastest”.

For a while Colin Dignum’s 2:37 from Ironman Canada in 1997 was thought to be the fastest on a legit course. But even with that some argued that Dignum’s effort should not count because he was not, “in the money”.

There is a bit of a back-story with the Dignum split in that it was somewhat of a legitimate set-up to have a go at it. Colin was a 2:20’ish marathon runner and a duathlete of some reknown. He was on the Canadian Duathlon team at the time. However, his go at this and at Ironman with a swim and that length of a bike was a one-off. And I think that’s why some scoffed at it.

I am one of those guys that scoffed at it then and do now. For Colin’s engine, his swim and bike were front of mid pack age group at best. So that split was no where close to Crowie’s 2:38 at Melbourne after redlining the swim and bike with Lanos, Cam Brown, and FVL ending up sub 8. Or Mark Allen’s 2:40 in 1989 that included T2.
