Lionel Sanders taper blog

Dude is a volume absorbing animal…

…“only” 110km of running past week for taper…

Interesting read. The 5,000m continuous swim should spark some comments! What surprises me is how a person can swim, run and ride indoors so much and keep the required focus to put in the quality workouts that Lionel does. I do not possess the mental fortitude to stick out workouts of that length and consistency.

I would have ran out of cartoons, TV series and movies a long time ago…

I think that’s what sets Lionel apart from the rest of the pack and kinda sums up his ascension up through the ranks so fast. He has a place he can go to mentally that most triathletes can only dream of getting to. I think he is intelligent enough to know what it’s going to take to get to the top of the heap. He is going to have to outwork the likes of Sebi / Don / Gomez / Frodo and the Brownlee’s and right now he is keeping up his end of the training required.

I believe he has said in the past that the ‘traditional tapers’ don’t work so well with him.

Regardless…looking forward to seeing what he does in FLA. I’ve predicted that it will be something special:)

By “traditional”, you mean bad?

This guy is a BEAST: 123bpm at 305 watts. He needs more speed on the swim, not just long continuous.

What if his peak HR is @150bpm?

Looking at some of his other blog posts, looks like max HR from some 430 watt bike intervals was in the 155-160 range. Big, slow beating heart is right.

A lot of people can train themselves into the ground. It’s not about outworking someone else, it’s about doing the training that gets each individual to the race in their best possible shape. For Lionel that might mean doing one thing and for someone else it might mean doing something else.

Yeah, the data: 5,000 m in 1:15:35 = 1:31 / 100m He is going to come out of the water 540-600 seconds behind Starky. That is a terrible set, but I think he is showing some improvement.

He needs a swim coach. He is young, he is going to figure all of this out. But honestly, I would expect someone to say “I swam a 5000 straight to make sure my endurance is up to par,” to follow that up with, “I hope they have good finishers medals.”

I don’t know what his motivation was but I don’t think it’s safe to assume he does his workouts purely for fitness, especially not this workout. He seems to do workouts that build his mental fortitude as well as his fitness. 5000m straight may do far more for his race at this point in the process from a mental perspective than a whole bunch of intervals would do from a fitness perspective.

Truth is, a lot of people are questioning a guy who has won a whole bunch of races this year.

Yeah, because he is unconventional and has a “weak” swim (in regards of the pro field) people question him. But as you said he has won A LOT of races this year. I expect that if he doesn’t win Florida or blows up people will armchair the $hit out of him saying he is doing this, that, and the other wrong and needs a swim coach. There are many ways to skin a cat, and Lionel is proof that his way works. Will be interesting to see how it unfolds in Florida.

he’s written a bunch of times that he’s starting with a swim coach immediately after florida.

Interesting he said he has reduced intensity to around race pace, and nothing much over that. Taper protocols often increase intensity during a taper while decreasing volume and (sometimes) frequency. Sounds like this approach has worked for him in the past, though.

I can’t see what the benefit of doing longer threshold and vo2 intervals would be. The idea of race pace is remind the body what pace and muscle firing rates need to occur on race day. It is the last race of his season, he doesn’t need to roll anything forward to another race. Ironman is a long day and IMO it is always better to come into them doing too little rather than too much.

Probably correct.

It’s Slowtwitch, you new here?
Seriously, though I agree. Why don’t we see how he does in Fl, before we start ripping apart his workouts as though he aims to “finish”

I am definitely rooting for the guy!

To preserve some training adaptations, like plasma volume, you lose quickly when training volume is reduced drastically during taper. Don’t think anyone is advocating doing too much of that either though. More like reintroducing it in this case since often more specific and lower intensity work has been in focus during the last training blocks before tapering.

This guy is the biggest talent to arrive to triathlon since Lance Armstrong.

I had to go back and re-read that bolded bit - I like what what he writes next:

“Note 2: I have a large heart”

Dry wit. Almost missed it.

Will Starky attribute Lionel’s performances to an enlarged heart from drug use? /pink
