Limar Helmets - versus Giro/Bell

Well the retention mechanism on my 2000 model year Giro is starting to disintegrate so I’m looking at some alternatives. This is sort of a good thing because Im moving from a dirt background to road/tri - at least for this year.

A look at new helmets turns out the usual suspects, Giro Pneumo/Atmos, Bell Ghisallo/Sweep all great helmets - but I happened on a very eye catching advertisement for Limar Helmets. I also found out that the LBS which is “semi-sponsoring” me can order them in - and are considering carrying the lineup to complement the rest of their dirt lids…

Does anyone have any experience with them? Which one would be comparable (in features and price) to the contenders from Giro/Bell

Thanks!

Just like with bikes, pick the one that fits best. I personally would love to wear a Bell Ghisallo on my Ghisallo, but Bell helmets just do not seem to fit me right. Giro helmets have always fit me well and I currently ride a Pneumo. My next purchase though will be the updated Atmos, which i have already tried. I have never tried a Limar, but briefly had a Lazer which fit but not as good as a Giro.
Cheers,

I like Giros, own an Atmos for road, but since their TT helmet is not out, I use a Bell Vortex (circa 1990’s) for TT.

Take a look at the LG TT helmets as well.

Any of the 900 (950, 911, 909) series Limar helmets would be in the same range as something like the Giro Pneumo. I found that the fit is similar to Giro. I’m looking at the 950 myself. Some of these have some kind of mesh in some of the front vents that is supposed to keep insects (BEES) from getting into the vents. This seems like a great idea that I’ve not seen elsewhere. You should check out their website to see which ones have this if this is of interest.

I own or have owned several helmets in the last few years(Giro, Selev, Rudy Project, Limar, Laser). One of my current helmets is a Limar 909. It’s a very nice lid. The retention system works well, it has a nice padded strap, and it fits my head nicely. You may or may not like the one large vent in the front. The new Bell Sweep R is also a really nice helmet. I’ve seen it on several people and it has a good look to it. Personally, I can’t stand Giro helmets - too much “mushroom head”

I think most helmets at the same price level are pretty comparable.

Fit is the decider though - try them on at the shop and see what feels right.

I have a Limar and love it. I bought it primarily based on fit. I was looking at a Giro Pneumo but the medium was too small and the large was too big. Limar’s L/XL size helmet is just in between Giro’s medium and large size.

I’m on my second Limar. From experience they work rather well as your head goes bounce bounce bounce off the pavement. Well ventilated. In 100+ temps have never felt like it was a heat trap sitting on my head. Next year, when it’s time for a new helmet unless someone comes out w/ something revoluntionary it’ll be a Limar.

Jekyll,

I highly recommend the Limar helmets - we do not even carry the Giro/Bell lineup anymore (Limar & LG). The Limar helmets are all bonded not taped, fit lower and have a more durable retention system. The 900 series does not have the bug netting but the lower end children’s helmets do. Try the 907.

As Herbert said (and like everything else in the sport) get the one that fits.

Thanks Triumph…

Its good to know the retention system is more durable since that is the part that is going on my Giro…

Giro USA offered a discount on a new helmet but I dont live in the States - I have yet to hear back from the Canadian distributor and Im not holding my breath…

I’m counting pennies to save up for a new lid - the 9 series looks awesome…except the carbon look ones look a little “weird” based on their pictures…

Hopefully the LBS will start carrying some so I can try some on…
