LIGHT road bike build...Have fun (UPDATED w/pics)

Weight projects are always fun! Cheaper that therapy! Hope you have a ball.

I’m a little over 6 feet and weigh 197 lbs. Nothing on the below list is rated for less tha 210 lbs. Hope it helps.

2006 Look 585 frame and fork size XL.
FSA internal headset
Ritchey 4 axis stem 130mm.
Zipp SL bar. Fizik gell pads and tape. Cat-Eye CD-300 computer.
2 M2 cages
USE Alien seat post.
Fizik Aliante Carbon saddle
SRAM Force Shifters and derailleurs
Zipp 202 rims – first edition
DT240s hubs. 28 hole. Radial front, 3-cross, both sides rear. DT competition spokes. M2 Skewers.
Nokon cables
FSA K-Force Light crank
ZG titanium brakes.
Vittora CX tubular on the front, Continental Podium on the rear.
M2 Stainless pedals.
Cycle dynamics 11-21 cassette.
13.9 lbs for everything! It goes up to 14.2 when I put the 11x30 on it to get my F-A up big hills.

Hope I didn’t leave anything out.

Thanks for the info.

I am around 180 right now, hopefully back to 176 in a couple of weeks so I am not light either. Some of the parts you mentioned are on my lists as first choice already. Do you like those cranks?

Peace

The cranks are fine - I got a nice break on the price. Not quite as stiff as D/A, though. If money’s not object, I’d like the Zipps, but the chainring selection is limited and I swap my rings if I"m not riding hills. If I’d had the money, I’d have chosen the integrated Stronglight Pulsions.

some nice suggestions, makes me want to build a light road bike.

Yeah, pretty entertaining project to tackle if you have the time to search, listen and are not in a hurry so you can buy with your head not your heart…

So far I have decided almost 100% on the following (have to make decisions if not you’ll be searching forever

  1. ZG Ti or KCNC brakes, depending on what deals I get
  2. KMC X10SL chain
  3. FSA K-force light crankset with ceramic BB…(suggestion to get it cheaper are welcome) or I am going to revisit Bmans crankset which comes almost to the same weight as this one the way he put it together
  4. Saddle, Fizik Arione CX

The jury still out on the rest of the components

What are options for Carbon, Clinchers that are 1400g or less and not uberly expensive, does that exists?

Peace

Forgot to mention. I originally had the KMC chain when I had D/A shifter and derailleurs. It just didn’t shift well with the Nokons. Put an Ultegra chain on it and it was fine. Once that chain wears out (I only have about 2k on the bike), I’ll try the KMC again.

Based on what you said in your original post, I’d do this:

–SRAM Red shifters & derailuers
–Dura Ace Cassette & chain
–FSA K Force Light cranks
–Thompson stem & seatpost - sure there are lighter but Thompson isn’t bad and you never have to worry about the quality.
–Nokon Cables
–Zero G Brakes
–Look Keo Carbon pedals
–Wheels - lots of great choices (but also where you can easily break the bank). American Classic, Zipp 303/404, you could also get some nice custom ones built.

Thanks,

I’ll probably go with a KMC chain instead but your suggestions are close to what I am thinking right now.

For the seatpost/bar combination I am also looking at easton and deda

Suggestions on clincher carbon that dont break the bank are welcome

Peace

Time for an update… and again thanks for all that helped with suggestions

It has been 2 months since I purchased the frame and I have been searching for the best parts for the $$$, bidding and looking for discounts, waiting in the shadows  etc, etc so finally I have purchased everything I need to start building the bike and most everything has arrived already. Here is a list of what will go into the build. I am guessing based on some actual, published and weight weenies listed weights that the bike can come at between 13.9 to 14.2 including pedals and bottle cages. I am happy with the total cost of the project. The wheels I already had but I am looking to get a lighter deep carbon set in the future that could probably lower the weight anywhere between 1/4 to 1/2 lbs depending on what I purchase or if I decide to join the dark side and use Tub.

So how much does it weight? Jamis is supposedly coming out with a BB30 version which would potentially be even lighter.
