Phil Ligget keep saying this and it drives me nuts.
“He deserves to win”.
I guess anyone that leads a race should ‘win’ it!
Argh!
Actually, it’s Liggett with two t’s.
God knows I love Phil and have listened to him call races for decades BUT,
I’m sad to say he is going batty in his dotage. Paul is having to correct him more and more like the dutiful son that he is and Phil is less and less coherent when the race heats up.
Time is the avenger.
I noticed the same thing about old Phil. I noticed that Paul has to correct him, as you mentioned, and was wondering if OLN has a producer in his ear to correct him as well. I still love the guy and he really is the voice of cycling. I hope he can put off going senile a little longer ;-).
Was it Saturday when he drew a complete blank on the Discovery rider leading the peleton…“and thats…thats…thats one of the Discovery boys…I’m sorry I can’t remember his name…Paul…do you…errrrr ummmm…(long embarassing silence) …yeah”
Cut to commercial break.
Yes I believe it was and it just made me shrink in my seat for poor Phil.
The other day he was mentioning how jealous of the fans that get to come to the mountain stages and get to camp out, party, and just enjoy the stage. This was something he had never experienced and he wanted to do this at some point. I was thinking that he may get that wish sooner rather than later. Again, I hope he sticks around as he has been the voice of cycling as far back as I can remember. I have some DVDs of Parix-Roubaix when he had a bit more hair and he actually had some dark hair. One of the classic voices of all time in sports.
He also called George Lance towards the end of the stage. Perhaps we’ll let that one by one the basis that it isn’t often that he has to mention George at the top of a climbing stage.
On the other hand, it isn’t like they even resemble each other remotely.
He called Popo Lance when he was on the podium for the white jersey in the first week as well. Paul corrected him.
I will say in his defense that if you were to lay up a side by side comparison of their profiles, especially with the Oakleys on, that they look very similar.
He was putiing on a white jersey though ;-).
I thinks he’s been sick during the tour so I cut him some slack. He might be having to take drugs which might make him a little hazy.
Actually, Paul Sherwin is starting to drive me nuts with his “…a man by the name of…”.
I am afraid I have done you all a disservice because, from now, you will also notice how often he says it and it will start to annoy you… no need for me to suffer alone.
On the other hand, they are great to listen to and can find all sorts of interesting things to say when nothing is happening. They could have been cricket commentators as well.
Cheers
Vernon
cricket commentators? …ha…ha…ha!
What really annoys me is the Sherwin line ‘dug deep into the suitcase of courage.’ For God’s sake, it was ok(ish) once, but every tour! Come on! Maybe he should say ‘dug deep into the suitcase of drugs,’ at least that would be funny rather than plain dumb.
I caught that too. I was like “hey that’s not… ahh whatever”.
How about “there’s no more power coming from the engine room”.
that would be the ‘fridge of drugs’ then…better to keep the little bottles fresh before injecting them…some years we heard of entire teams disappearing from mysterious stomach sickness
