Team CSC’s Jens Voigt came close to a beautiful victory in this season’s last of the spring classics; Liège-Bastogne-Liège. However, Voigt was beaten by Alexandre Vinokourov of T-Mobile at the finish in Ans.

With 80 kilometers to go, Team CSC’s Peter Luttenberger got things started by launching an attack in the peloton. This created a large lead group with most of the main contenders, and Jens Voigt initiated the decisive break, when he escaped with 52 kilometers to go. Vinokourov reacted quickly and bridged up to Voigt and the two strong riders kept the other main contenders at bay all the way to the finish…

”Of course I’m not happy about being that close and not winning the race. Liège-Bastogne-Liège is for me the biggest one day race in the world, and an opportunity like this doesn’t come around very often in your career. I was so determined to make it all the way and I felt like riding in spite of being caught in Flèche Wallonne. It was not supposed to happen again. Vinokourov is a great rider and not easy to beat one-on-one, but when he couldn’t drop me on the last two climbs, I started dreaming about the victory. My timing wasn’t the best in the sprint, but there’s no use in speculating about this now. After all I made it all the way without being caught,” said Jens Voigt after the race.

Thanks to his second place, Jens Voigt is now ninth in the ProTour rankings and with three riders among the 20 best in Liège-Bastogne-Liège, Team CSC improved to third in the teams rankings.

You probably got to watch that live didn’t you? Bastard!

Looked like a wicked sweet finish. Cant wait to see it on like 7 week tape delay.

I have to say that it is a nail biter to see if the two V’s could stay away, and when they turned the right hander into the last 200 metre uphill finish it was a full on dragstrip sprint to the line.

Oh, and yeah I did watch it live.

I note Vino had an SRM on his bike. It would be wondrous to see THAT file!

did you notice also that there are no more brit teams in the Euro Cup in rugby now that Toulouse took care of Leicester? hehehe

Vino tens to win more races with his SRM than without it. He previously won rthe Amstel and 3 stages of Paris-Nice with it. Now that’s interesting data, unlike the power of 6:30 IM’s…

I think the first guy to win a big race with SRMs on was Riis (also amstel) in 1996…

No, I had been too busy watching France slide down the FIFA ratings.

I remember that… a sad but entertaining day for cycling, and a little peek to what was going to happen at the Tour.

It is interesting as mostr riders use these pre season and then use standard cranks at their big races. Looks like Vino is on course for the tour…

Also I think Voigt fluffed the sprint. He tried to sprint side by side with Vino when he should have sat on his wheel and come round. Oops…

hey jk…also interesting to see was the Phonak boys using PowerTap SL hubbs on their Zipp wheeks…the yellow computers on the handlebars were unmistakeable…Vinukourov had the SRM cranks of course
.

what was sad about a guy holding 500w for 2hrs? You think he was on something?
