I got a LG Rocket in large size by mail order. The polystyrene inner seems to fit my head well and comfortably and the tail sits nicely on my back. However the gap between the ear covers and my face is a bit larger than I expected - about 2cm between the ear covers and my cheek bones. Is that how they are meant to fit?
My expectations are not based on a lot of experience with aero helmets as this is my first one. My only comparisons are with the fit of a Bell Meteor and Giro Advantage 2 - with these helmets the ear covers were very tight to the side of my head and it was tricky to get sunglasses on.
Is it usual and OK for the gap between the ear covers on a LG rocket and cheekbones to be about 2cm (3/4 inch)?
Hmmm … I don’t think I have that much of a gap. Were you in between sizes? I wear a medium and it fits perfect. Or is your head 'kinda like Beekman from the Muppets?
i had similar concerns…size M wouldn’t get over my head & ears (width), size L could but felt a little on the large size.
in hindsight, it’s now a really comfy fit (L)…no probs putting it on in a hurry in transition, no issues with glasses, no squeeze or pinch on the head/ears/cheekbones during long stints.
as long as it fits nice & snug on top of your head, and fastens securely, then its a good size for you
I’m not sure what to say about the fit, but I have a 2007 model with 7 vents and I have two points to share with you. One is that your ability to hear cars or people coming up on you will be harder then a normal helmet and its harder to turn your head looking for traffic then a normal helmet. The second point is that the under side of the tail is unfinished and it will tear up the fabric on your tri top between the shoulder blades. So the thing to do is put some tape on the jaged tail edges to protect your clothes and don’t wear this thing for riding in car traffic (use a regular road helmet, I like the LAS one with the aluminum skid lid/air scope on the top). I do like wearing my Rocket for time trials and Tris, at the very least I look fast. Tim
Totally agree on the reduced ability to hear. Quite noticable vs. a regular road helmet.
Good tip on the tape over the edges.
To the OP, I wear a medium, it fits well on my head (snug, yet comfortable)…and there is a slight gap between the sides of my head and the ear flaps as well. I think that is normal.
As I was the originator of this thread I thought I should let you know what conclusion I reached. I tried on a medium Rocket and it was too small - it seemed much smaller than the large. My bike shop had a time trial coach in store and he told me to get the visor as well as it covers up some of the gap between the side of face and helmet ear covers.
So, I got the large helmet with a visor. I’ve just done a 10km TT with it. I took 30 secs off my best time (which I set only 2 weeks ago so in similar conditions on the same outdoor oval cycle track). I definitely noticed the reduced drag compared to my Bell Sweep R when coming round the bends into a stiff headwind. The visor worked well for me in terms of visibility and shielding, although it might require some small adjustments as the nose piece was pressing on one side of my nose. The helmet was very comfortable, but a bit warmer than my old Bell Sweep R road helmet. I’m aiming to use the Rocket in Ironman NZ in March and I think it will be comfortable enough.
Someone correct me if i’m wrong, but i believe the Rocket (and most aero helmets for that matter) test faster without the visor. But if you’re M25-29 next year please keep it…see you in Taupo

I have seen that assertion in several threads on Slowtwitch but have not been able to find a link to test results supporting this claim. Anyone have a link to the tests? It seems counter-intuitive that the visor would cause more drag as the visor appears to be more aerodynamic than a face. Having said that I do see most photos of Lance doing TTs show him wearing sunglasses.
I mail ordered mine. From the measurement chart I was just on the line between medium and small. In fact the measurement when I ordered was just under this line so I ordered small. I kept rechecking the measurement and feared I might have mis measured by a few cm as it appeared I was now measureing just over. Anyway it arrived and the small was a very snug fit and I do have to push the old ears into place after putting the helmet on. I tried a medium at the expo and it seemed way to large. Did the IM with the small and it was perfect.
I guess it makes sense to go with the smallest size you can handle.
My buddy’s head measured 2cm more than me and he tried mine and wants to order the small too.
