What are the some significantly important marathons in the US? I know Chicago, Boston, New York are majors but how about the “winter” marathons dated between Jan and April?
Las Vegas falls in that category, as do Grandma’s (MN), and LA. Just depends what you are looking for- scene, scenery, size, prestige, etc.
www.marathonguide.com is probably the best resource.

Don’t know about “significantly important”, but there is:
LA Marathon
Disney World
Houston
Austin
Rock-N-Roll Arizona
Georgia
Country Music Marathon in Nashvile
The Big Sur International Marathon in April, is the most beautiful marathon in the world, and pretty tough, too.

No argument there!!
Shamrock Marathon in Virginia Beach on St Patty’s weekend.
Vegas Marathon is a sham. It’s an ugly course and the finishers medal suck. Also, there were A LOT of problems with the course last year. Runners who pulled out of the race had no way back to the start, a buddy had hypothermia at a water stop, and there was no procedure to get to medical assisstance, and mile markers were wrongly placed.
Plus it’s Friggin’ expensive!!!

First week in early Dec. Out West we have:
1.) Cal International (CIM) in Sacramento. Biggish (3-5,000?) with an elite field. Very fast course
2.) Tucson is decent. Medium size (less than 1,000)
Early January the big ones are:
3.) Houston: Very fast, huge field (10,000?) elite field
4.) Phoenix: Also fast, huge field, elite field
Other people can chime in with others …
Thanks guys! It’s been a huge help.
-Grandmas
-Twin Cities
-Catalina island
-Bug Sur
-Marine Corps
-Flying Pig
-Last chance for Boston
.
Another one not mentioned is Miami at the end of January - fantastic race. Flat course, early start to beat the heat - a very good PR course!
Grandma’s Marathon is in June.
wow, most I have spoken to had the exact opposite rection. I ran the old LV marathon where they dropped you off in the desert 26.2 mile from LV and said see you in a few hours. That course started at a serious old school casino in Jean, it was an awesome race with beautiful scenerey.
New course runs the stip and then through industrial LV.

I did that one in '06. Whenever I get the desire to do another one, I will go back. It was somewhat flat, had a nice oceanfront run out and back to the finish and it had a laid back atmosphere. The mega-marathons where you have to “hurry up and wait” are not for me. Plus, some of the elite professional triathletes run that one as an early season tune up. Who knows, you might find yourself running next to Heather Fuhr or Michellie Jones. Again, I can not say enough good things about that marathon.
Mardi Gras in NOLA is that time frame. Totally flat save for a couple of highway overpasses and almost entirely below sea level.
Some good scenery for an urban marathon when I did it. They really tried to route you through the pretty and historic parts of the city.
yeah…so many of the elites live here in the winter, so that race is a pretty natural choice for them to get some race-level intensity.
I’m fortunate that I live in the area and run on the course quite a bit…PCH is just a wonderful place to run.
I know what you mean about the mega-marathons…I’ve done LA, NYC and Marine Corps in DC…those are huge. Though, of all that I’ve done NYC is still my favorite for the crowd support. LA is my least favorite…

Yeah, I had a hard time keeping myself from running too much the week before the marathon and blowing my taper.
