lace is really trying hard to make a big comeback, starting with Prada’s spring last year, it has popped its head up here and there. while i think people are eager for fantasy and romance, lace is something i don’t love. in small doeses of tatted lace, it is ok, but too much is just too much.
in regards to Mrs. Obama’s dress, the texture of the lemongrass coat was fine, but i would have like to have seen a permium quality compliment in a natural fiber, like a beautiful wool, in the dress. the dress and coat in the same fabric was “too lacy” and too textured for me, i think it needed a little more sohpistication than that. at times i thought, “it looks curtain’y”.
also i didn’t like the bow as a closure across the chest, one big gold or silver button would have been killer. bows across the chest enhance flat chestedness and i do not like that. also for such a sophisticated ensemble, the bow leveled it some and i couldn’t get past it. this was a major design mistake, IMO.
the contrasting olive shoes and gloves i didn’t mind, but as a Storto glove fan (we are dear friends you know ;), the gloves exposed her wrist and that is a major no no especially in 20 degree weather. i never let one single person out of my shop with their wrist exposded for winter gloves!
what would have been super killer would be olive green wool gloves, something like the Storto gloves i sell in my shop; longer with a little slouch and body to them. i found leather and lace contrasting by the hands to be a bit too hard and extreme, IMO. moreover, driving gloves are meant for driving…the gloves were just all wrong.
also, while the shoes were not much to comment on, rather than high heels it would have been killer to see her in long boots. that would have been tres chic and very unique!
so for summary of the daytime ensemble, i didn’t mind the lemongrass color, i do think it was on the happier side of things and the runways are chock full of yellow right now. so it was very contemporary, IMO.
the contrasting olive in the accessories was probably the best color choice to make, although the gloves were shoddy with the wrist showing; they looked cheap. this was almost a deal breaker for me.
lastly, there should have been a complementary fabric, like a beautiful wool, on the dress. (a silky fabric would have looked “spring’y” in the lemongrass color, so that i why i suggest a true winter fabric like wool)
but where ever the day ensemble fell slightly short, the evening gown blew my mind. i ran in here right away and looked to see a 26 year old designer, it almost made me cry.
on the close ups it was really detailed without being blinggy (which is so out), or over the top. it was elegant and romantic. it was perfect, and i loved the angular strap to offset some of the pouff and romance of the dress.
the strap was a brilliant design strategy, it “grounded” the dress to some extent which was fabulous, IMO.
as an indie designer myself, i was thrilled to see she sought out small labels, it really won me over.
Mrs. obama is very much herself. she waves big and doesn’t seem to crimpy or stiff in her mannerisms; it’s not a bad thing, frankly while it surprises me a little i do find it refreshing. it is a very different personal style & mannerism than i recall from former first ladies. also while she is quite tall, she is not a model, she is every woman.
