President Trump is set to unveil controversial legislation Wednesday that would sharply curtail legal immigration to the United States, according to a White House official.
As NPR’s John Burnett reported,
"Their bill would do three things: First, limit the number of foreign nationals who are able to get green cards to reunite with their families already in the U.S. — currently the largest category of legal immigrants; second, cut the number of refugees in half; third, eliminate the diversity visa lottery — a program that gives visas to countries with low rates of immigration to the United States.
I think this would be a huge mistake. I believe that we need to increase legal immigration and streamline the process to becoming a full American citizen.

Why? Do we not have enough people? Can these new immigrant be/do anything? Or should we try to find people who can fill jobs that we need filled?
Agreed. I can’t believe that this bill is begin worked by Perdue. He, of all people, should understand how much of the GA agricultural economy depends on immigrant labor. Prioritizing only highly skilled workers, and not fixing the system to allow for more seasonal low skilled workers is going to have a bad impact on food prices.

Now that I got the mandatory shot at Duffy out of the way, on to critizing policy.
The Mandarine Menace is playing to his base, of course.
Limit immigration! They’re taking our jobs! Get rid of Mexicans!
Plays well in coal country, where those coal jobs are surely coming back strong, so nobody wants immigrants competing with good ole boys for those prime jobs
Isn’t there another thread here that says 12,000 jobs are unfilled? Doesn’t the US need people to fill all the jobs that Trump is creating?
Being a fiscal conservative, I’m usually more aligned with the GOP because their 1 or 2 fiscal hawks is more then the Dems have. But the GOP is on the wrong side of Immigration and it’s disappointing. They’re using the issue to whip up ferver, even tho we get so much good out of immigration, both legal and illegal. What we ought to do is let in every SOB that is willing to work hard and learn English. Every single one. Don’t build a fence for christ’s sakes, roll out a red carpet. Once they pass their English test, make them a citizen.
20yrs from now all Western countries will be competing against each other to attract immigrants in order to help pay for all the entitlements us gray hairs will be consuming. We’ll look back at the current anti-immigrant ferver and wonder if we’d lost our minds.
We don’t have enough people to fill the jobs. If we had enough people to fill the jobs they would be filled. The question to ask is why American workers will not work harder for less like an immigrant will.
Land of the free, home of the brave. Give your tired…
That’s part of what this country is all about. Open arms to those who want to become American.
Right now, non-citizens are taking low skill jobs because they are paid less. Why are they paid less? Because they are non-citizens. Essentially they are the modern day slaves. Legalize them and others who want to work and empower them with the full rights and responsibilities of being an American.
Why not?
Do we not have enough people?
Yes. We have way more than “enough”. What’s your point?
Can these new immigrant be/do anything?
Isn’t that what America is supposed to be about? Individuals being allowed to be/do anything?
Or should we try to find people who can fill jobs that we need filled?
This is just a weird concept to me. We should have a country full of people doing what they want to do. We aren’t a country where jobs are assigned to certain people who fall under certain criteria.
I don’t disagree with you on this. It does raise a question in my mind, though – at what point might they also target adoption of children internationally? Like the immigration visa proposals that don’t appear to do anything than stem immigration & not deal with the jobs those folks are filling, I’d speculate that a potential stem on international adoption wouldn’t be met with programs to make adoption within the U.S. easier to manage. You’ve been through the international process if I recall correctly. Anything about that which raises concerns with you right now as we’re hearing a lot of noise against immigration?
The visa is issued to the (legally adopted) child of American citizens at the American embassy in the country of origin.
As soon as the child sets foot on American soil that child automatically becomes a citizen.
There’s nothing proposed (that I’m aware of) that would change this. Most of the issues with foreign adoption stem from problems in the child’s country of origin.
That being said, the adoption process in the US, particularly California, is fucking terrible and needs a major overhaul. It’s run by the states so…

I don’t want our country to have a draconian and xenophobic immigration policy like…

In my little microcosm, the wonderful little world of biomedical research, if you only hire Americans, research will be dead in less than 5 years. Labs will close. And that’ll be it.
With big data being all the rage right now, remove all the foreigners from Google, Amazon, Microsoft, IBM, and Dell, and all these companies will relocate abroad.
So that’s one very specific area (well 2) but I am sure you can see the problem…

I agree. We certainly do not want to put in place a merit-based immigration policy like those pricks in Canada.

…or Australia. Heaven forbid we should want highly skilled, law-abiding, financially secure immigrants who contribute to our society, pay taxes and help keep our economy strong.

The downside with adopting a policy like ours is that when the economy takes a turn for the worse, there is no one to blame for all the problems caused by immigrants. People have to look at themselves and that just won’t do…

Of course it is abysmal. Complaints about tweets or pussy-grabbing are merely proxies for abiding disgust over the truly atrocious nativist policies which Trump supporters embrace. The GOP has devolved into a parody of itself.
