It seems that it has fallen onto me to figure out an organizational plan for all our sports equipment in the garage. I’m a visual person so I need some help in trying to figure out where to start. We both are outdoor junkies and do at least two sports each season. So: ski, boarding, snowshoe, camping, rock climbing, alpine climbing, cycling, cross, and triathlon…
I do know I want the bikes off the floor and some sort of wall system. Recommendations would be great!
You can use the search function on the site to research this topic. It has been covered a lot in the past as I know that I have posted pictures several times. These should help.
I went whole hog on the Rubbermaid FastTrack after seeing them in the New Years “take a picture” thread. It’s been expanded since this picture:
Got the rails and the vertical bike hangers at Home Depot that weekend and the buckets and shelf and tool hangers on Amazon. Surprisingly cheap and pretty easy to install and reconfigure if you need to. I really wish I had the space to do the 3 rails with the vertical shelving.
If you have the ceiling height, I recommend putting pairs of simple utility hooks in the ceiling and hanging bikes in a row upside down. I have six in my garage like that and it’s nice to be able to use the walls for other stuff like shelves, cabinets, and workbenches.
We had a Fast Track system in the garage in our old house. It was very flexible and easy to use. I would like to install it in the garage in our the house we’re in now, but the garage needs some renovation first. Is that a single 8’ rail?
The issue with my wife’s basket bike was corrected shortly after the taking of the photo.
Edit to add: And, yes, both cars go in there every night. My challenge to myself when I bought the place last fall was to not have anything resting on the garage floor. Thus, the wall and ceiling mounting of everything.
I added a 4 foot wide black rubber mat along the entire house side of the garage. It makes it feel like another room. I also use the garage to do my indoor riding. I set up my trainer on the cyclops mat in front of the double doors and use the trainerroad app on my laptop.
Not as palatial (or clean) …(or organised) as some, but does the job in a 5 x 3m space.
Bikes at the front, shelves on both sides behind for camping, skiing, swimming, gardening, power tools and all the other shit that lives in a garage. Sewing, study, spare bed, tv etc upstairs.
It does have the advantage that a cold beer is no more than 1m from the trainer bike:-)
On the back wall in front of the cars, and on either side of the cars, stuff leaning against the walls and/or boxes bins and unused furniture and other items stacked on top of one another.
That’s my garage. There’s lots of room for more crap. One day I may get a shelf system.
