Here is a good photo of his bike. Looks like he’s rather “upright” and not to far forward. This make’s me feel good about my bike that I set up just like his.
Here’s the link if that didn’t work. Some other good pics as well.
Of course, according to Slowmans fit formula (that 90 degree angle thingy) with a “relaxed” road bike, and no specail seatpost (toobtain a pseudo tri fit) then a rider will have to be more upright.
Simon is riding a road bike. He is quite probably at or near 90 degree angles for power production as well as efficient breathing. This means his overall position will be relativley upright compared to a true tri position. This appears to be what he has, inthe photos.
Is he faster than me in my true tri position? You bet? Is he as fast as Bjorn? I don’t think so. Could he be faster in a tri position? Probably. On hilly terrain? Dunno. Is his bike set up for his preferences on the course he’s riding? Probably.
Can he run faster than I ride? Probably!!!
To me, it seems like a strange setup, particularly the drop bars. However, in the end there are sevearl important issues to remember. No-one cares how aero he is, No-one cares how much power he can produce. No-one cares if he could be faster or not. We just care about geting ourselves as fast as WE can go, while still run off the bike etc.
Simon can ride pretty well and run off the bike pretty well. With a samply size of 1, there is not too much we can draw from his example however.
Well, these are two different bikes in two different races.
The first pic is a tall guy on a road bike - a custom geometry Yaqui Carbo Ocotillo DL that he raced at Treasure Island and Alcatraz last year. He has some cut down streamliners in front.
The Soloist with drop bars is consistent with his riding style - he has always been high. There is a picture of him - an ad for something - that shows him on a full on tri bike, but the stack height is huge - may as well have been a road bike. Kinda reminds me of a Max Testa fit - like Macca and Lieto.
I am interested to see what he decides to ride at Kona. Will he go with a P3 or stick with the soloist?
Gotta love a guy that rides Campy - warms my heart.
So far he is killing everyone off the bike. Simon Lessing is on fire and his bike splits are not. . .so what is it. . .someone decided being an uberbiker ain’t all that and took his show to the shoe and got some trophy money ta’ boot.
Sorry but bjorn is going to have to really kill it to catch simon. It’s hard to tell and I think it’s exciting to start seeing FAST bike splits and FAST run split like these. Suffice to say that I couldn’t touch either of these splits in the events by themselves so it’s really cool.
Oh, and Gordo, looks like the runners still have their say in this sport eh?
Yes, I have other photos — Heather’s bike, swim/bike/run-course shots, transition area overview, swim start, finish-line day and night, scenery, etc… are you looking for something specific?
This guys is a man after my heart–C-record AND a classic, old-school Selle San Marco Rolls saddle. I run the exact same set-up . . . thanks for the detailed photos.
This one’s too easy. Just goes to show you. All the tricked out gear in the world will NOT make you faster. Good wheels, reliable componants, a pair of aerobars and a BOAT LOAD of hard work will take you where you want to go.
