Leg Pain - Possible Stress Facture?

I have this pain in the front of my leg 3 inches above the ankle. If I rest it the pain goes away. It comes on after a long run or ride. The pain is more intense when I put my legs up and I am resting - I feel it throb. I suspect a possible stress facture. I plan on getting an xray. Has anybody experienced anything like this? What did you do?

Come on. Anybody had a stress facture? Tell us your story.

If it’s a pinpoint area, then it’s more likely to be a stress fracture. You’re best off to go get the x-ray and a bone scan either way…

I had tibial stress fractures and it hurt just walking around. Maybe you have shin splints. Stress fracture generally won’t show up on an x-ray, you need a bone scan.

yup, same here. and even pushing off the wall at the pool. never hurt while resting.

a bone scan will confirm/deny any fracture best.

good luck

Jump up and down on that leg. If it is pinpoint painful, good possibility of a stress fracture. I’m not a doctor, but I played one with Monk’s sister.

I had a stress fracture… but it only aggravated me during impact. Cycling wouldn’t do it. Shin splints are more likely in your case.

Actually, I didn’t have a stress fracture. I later figured out that the pain started after I had kicked myself while running. That cuased a hairline fracture 3/4 through my tibia. Same symtoms as a stress fracture though.

Thanks for all the feedback.

Interesting that some people thing it may be shin splints. I come from a running back ground and have had shin splints many times. Whenever I had it the area mostly effect was the top half of my shin. This is low. Anybody have shin splints down low near to the foot/ankle?

Yep, have shin splints in my lower leg all the time.

I’ve had two stress fractures and the pain was even noticeable just going down stairs. Does it bug you then?

When I walk or go up and down stairs it does bother me. Putting my leg up only supported by my foot hurts.

yeah, get a bone scan or MRI just to be safe.

I may or may not have had a stress fracture in my foot. It hurt when running and even from swimming with the flip turns. It was painful enough for me to stop running completely for some time because it really hindered my form. It was still quite sore from running (and even walking) for a total of seven weeks.

Doctor gave me the diagnosis of a stress fracture, but nothing was seen in the xray (like folks said above, MRI is best to see if its a stress fracture).

Given my quickness in healing, someone recently said I likely didn’t have one so who knows.

See a doctor and get an MRI (or bone scan) to make sure you are properly diagnosed.

Yes. I’ve had a stress fracture - way back in HS cross country. I could not run at all w/o pain. Pain was 3-4 inches above the ankle but not directly on the front of the tibia. Slightly inside.

Every now and then when I extend the long run a little too much or increasing running volume a little too much, I will feel a slight tenderness in that same area, usually not during the run but an hour or so later. When this happens, I just scale back my running for about a week.

Thanks everyone. I made an appointment to see a sports medicine doctor on Monday. I’ll report back. What sucks about this is in two weeks I am flying my son from the East Coast to do some cross training in Tahoe. This may prevent me from skiiing with only two weeks recovery.
