how do i add around 1/2 cm to my right leg length. I want to add that height to my bike shoe cleat. Is there any way for it?
I have heard others on here discuss shims for cycling shoes for just this purpose. I am not familiar with the product so hopefully someone else can chime in.
ok bump…help me find shims
.
I believe the make of LeWedge also makes the shims… google that.
i just measured my leg lengths. My right leg is almost half inch longer than the left leg and i get top of right knee pain while cycling. Isn’t that contradictory?
Hey,
shims aren’t necessarily the solution.
If your leg length discrimination comes from a shorter tibia, then yes, it’s possible that using/ making shims 1/2 the difference of the discrepancy could be the solution.
If the difference in leg length arises from different length femurs, adjusting the for aft (with NO shims) position of the cleats could take up the difference.
Often the body has already compensated itself. Unless your discrepancy is causing pain, or you are riding crooked on the bike (eventually leading to pain) you are just as likely to cause issues as solve them by monkeying position. (If it ain’t broke… )
Measuring the difference:
Have a physio/ chiropractor (better yet two different ones) check this. Don’t tell them what you think (ie avoid leading questions). Finding where the difference is from can be trickier. A really simple method is to lie on your back with your heels at your butt. Have a friend find 2 identical land marks on your knee and place a level across them…
My point is that it’s trickier then just throwing shims under a cleat. Also many (most?) problems are muscle imbalances pulling at hips and joints, and not a bone issue at all.
I have a 1" difference.
Many years ago I went to a shoe repair shop. I took a Look cleat with me and asked him to make a leather 1/4" shim in the same shape as the cleat. He even drilled out the bolt slots. It worked like a charm. I had to go to Home Depot and get longer bolts for the cleats. The leather shim only costs a few dollars at the shoe repair shop.
I also added a wedge under the same heel inside the shoe.
Both these made up nearly a 1/2" of the 1" difference.
Afer many years I removed both of the shims and no longer use anything for running or cycling. I’ve had my pedal stroke analysed and they found that my right (short side) pedals more toe down then the regular side. I have no problems.
wow…there is more complications!
so what will placing the level across do? Will it tell where the LLD is arising from? and if yes, how?
