While giving my bike a wipe-down after the weekend’s riding, I noticed that the rear wheel (Easton Velomax Vista) had a very tiny bit of left/right play. Basically, if I hold the frame tight with one hand and jiggle the wheel (at the rim) with my other hand, there is a very slight amount of play. It’s not something that I can see. It’s just a very slight “thump” that I can feel. I haven’t noticed it during riding.
Is this “normal” for a wheel that has ~4500 miles on it? Is there anything I should/can do to “fix” it?
Thanks.
Steve
It sounds like your rear hub needs an adjustment, or maybe it needs new bearings. Take it to your LBS and ask them to tighten your rear hub to remove the play. Hopefullly that will take care of the problem.
I don’t know what happened to my last post. I have a Mavic wheel with low miles on it and it exhibits this same lateral play. My mechanic tightened it up a touch but then it was too tight. We backed it out to its original position and we came to the conclusion that the wheel ‘tightens up just right’ when it is weighted. For what it’s worth I rented some Zipp 808s last year and the rear wheel also had this lateral play.
??? Did you have something to add?
Steve
Generally, there should be no play when the QR is closed. Adjust the wheel bearings such that they have the slightest bit of play when off the bike that is removed by the compression of the QR skewer when closed.
It is not surprising that after 4500 miles a bit of play has developed-probably just a little wear in the bearings/races. If everything is still smooth, then a bearing adjustment is all that is needed.
