Left back muscles hurt while cycling

I have a problem while cycling. My left back muscles hurt. The pain starts just below my waisteline on my butt and goes up and down my back on the left side. It never hurts on the right side. Does anyone know how I can fix this? Do I need to work out my back muscles? Do I need to get more flexible in my hamstrings? Are my hips rocking too much when I ride?

Thanks.

saddle may be too high, or you may be too stretched out, or your front end may be too low. leg-length discrepancy could be a contributing factor to all of these potential problems.

Don’t F- around with this. Go see a good sports chiropractor—sounds like your pelvis is twisted and maybe some other stuff going on. A tell-tale sign that your pelvis is out of whack is a leg length discrepancy—have someone check your leg length while you’re lying on the floor. Don’t go to a PT becuase you’re afraid of chiro’s (like a lot of people do)— the time to go to a PT would be after you get evaulated by a chiro. After you’re adjusted (by the chiro) and normal, then go work with the PT (if needed) to fix any strength imbalances you may have which got you injured in the first place.

Good luck. Remember the longer you go with your back out of whack the longer it will take after the adjustement to regain normalc.

And no I’m not a chiro—just have had issues with my back on the bike and from mogul skiing.

Spindogg, I’m a chiro but you basically took the words right out of my mouth. Leg lengths, pelvic torsion, sacro-iliac mobility are they first things that I’d look at, not to mention bike fit.

Cerveloguy, you said you were a chiro? Mind if I email you to pick your brain about a back injury?

Sure, feel free to send me a PM. But realize that I can only answer general questions. It’s impossible to examine/diagnos your condition over the net.

I have a similar problem, but only on one bike. After about one hour on my road bike, I get pain and stinging sensations low and to the side. My tri bike and Mtn bike are fine…and I have a more closed hip angle on the road bike. Tha might be your problem.

Hmmmm…ok not trying to hijack this thread, nor am I attacking or criticizing the like of CG or other chiros on this forum but, “Don’t go to a PT because you’re afraid of chiros.”??? Why is that?

Erichollins, you live in Texas, which is a state that allows PTs the freedom to treat patients using spinal mobilization/manipulation. If you find a well-trained PT who has manual skills, provided that is the treatment you need, you may be able to take care of your issues at one office vice 2. Not saying that you shouldn’t see a chiropractor, but don’t go to a chiropractor because you think that is the only professional who can perform spinal mobilization/manipulation.

Do, however, be wary of those who try to diagnose your problem on an internet forum, especially with the limited amount of information you provided. Good luck with your back.
