how many times have i nagged some of you about heat training…how in the beginning of a heat season it requires going slower, backing down mileage or time training in order to adapt to the heat.
this past weekend was very high humidity and hoter than hot! i went out yesterday and choose to do a long stretch of highway that has not but a speck of shade. naturally, this route was followed by climbing one of the hardest hills in cincinnati. (cause I’m smart like that)
i’ll tell you what, if it weren’t for the new INFINIT nutrition formula i just ordered i wouldn’t have made it home–this stuff has made me a convert to say the least…it’s a miracle potion.
but anyways, i wanted to get in another 25 miles (through the hills mind you), but had an abnormially high heart rate and decided to bring it in. as usual, i felt like a slacker for bringing it in even though i know it was the smart thing to do (not to mention i had but a sip left of the infinit).
so, i confess. i have nagged some of you on heat training, but didn’t follow my own words of advice–that it’s ok to back it down, take the time to adapt, not to feel badly over it, etc.
most importantly, for those of you coming next week–be ready, it will be another serious scorcher
yeah, it’s days like yesterday that actually, dare I say, make me look forward to the crispness of fall. i can’t believe i’m saying that already when it’s only june! i don’t want to wish it away–but it can certainly be hard to take.
Usually I’m a hot weather freak… but doing 30 miles solo @ 20.5mph while it’s 99 degrees with 80 something humidity was stupid. I couldn’t wak a straight line afterwards.
Yup, hot Kitty - missed you on the group. Did about 70 miles yesterday and I was spent for the day. I actually was trying to make it hard on myself to get used to this stuff - been nasty at 95 degrees and high humidity. Well, it worked - the “group” only did 40 or so. Sisney was out for 5 hours + prepping for Lake Placid - yikes.
Yeah, I hear you. When I left for my solo 120 mile ride/3 mile run brick on Saturday, the temp was 91 with a heat index of 98. Good stuff. The first few times this summer in conditions like that, I totally melted. I think I’m starting to get reacclimated, though, so that’s a good thing. It will be interesting this summer…
great to know. 8 is early for me, but it’s getting hotter and hotter so i’ll try my best after the 4th–in these conditions the earlier the better (well, to some extent )
so, yeah, get on it–order the infinit! you will be like superman on wheels !
BTW, I’m aiming for 75 or 100 for the BCBCBCBC ride. i have no choice but to train
well, let me be the first to say that you’re right.
the first time out it had a big test to measure up to–yesterday in the 97 degree heat with a humidity and heat index in the 100’s. a hard ride too with a solid pace and tough hills–zero shade. no complex carbs of any sort for at least 4 days (just fiberous carbs with fruits and vegtables, clean proteins and healthy fats). so, for this ride, the performance was all up to the infinit. it sure made a believer out of me. i can’t believe i rode so strong in those conditions with my nutrition so lean and meek in the previous days.
did you get turned onto it during the buckeye challenge?
BTW, does your wife run? can’t remember…I may be looking for a runner to relay the buckeye challenge with me and for next summer–i’ll do bike and swim…
She runs to keep herself trim and skinny, but no longer that 2-3 miles. Also she absolutely hates it, but she likes the way her ass looks from it, so do I.
