Anybody try to learn a new language recently? I am in my mid thirties but would like to really learn Spanish fluently, not just scrape by pathetically with the 30 words of vocab I learned/remember from HS? Any ideas aside from immersion (I am not moving)? I see those Rosetta Stone ads all the time - any good?
I haven’t tried Rosetta but I’ve heard great reviews. I’ve had great success with Pimsleur CDs. Like most things, your progress will depend on how much time you put into it and how regularly you go through your lessons.
If you really want to learn, I think you need to immerse yourself in the language, which you can do without moving. At least an hour a day. Some reading, some writing, some listening. Rosetta is great, I am using it now. I have also listened to Pimsleur. Watch latin tv. Find someone who speaks it and eat lunch with them on a regular basis, speak in spanish only. Download a few podcasts. Maybe even bust out your old high school books. Bottom line is use a bunch of different resources, do it often, and stick with it.
