Leaking Valve Core

I’m trying to get my new to me HED 3 wheels ready for my first ever time trial. I glued up the Conti Sprinter tires and pulled the valve core to add some Orange Seal. When I pulled the core, the small O ring on the inside got caught up and tore. I ditched it and used plumbers tape on the threads. They held air fine for a few days.

I went to top them up this weekend and after 20 min it went flat. My question is what should I do to fix it? Pull the core and re tape? I only used one wrap so maybe two would be better? Buy a conti tube, pull the core and use that as a replacement? I assume it would fit with no issues. The TT is on Wednesday afternoon so I have bit of time to get it fixed.

Pull the core from a spare tube you or a friend has sitting around…even an old flat. IIRC the valve core doesn’t have a tapered thread that would cause the teflon tape to form a good seal. An o-ring squishes to form a nice tight seal.

Thanks.

I’ll look around the house tonight and see if I can find a tube with removable cores.

Now I just need to clean up my messy glue job and I’ll be good to race.
