Le tour de NASCAR (spoiler)

Did any of you folks see that finish? This is how bike racing will become popular in North America, especially in the Southern states. “Shucks, pa! Did ya see them skinny lil’ white bike racers all crashin’ over each other and givin’ 'emselves black eyes and cuts and bruises? That was sure cool!”

In 10-20 years we’ll see late model Cervelos, Litespeeds, Times, Treks, etc. up on cement blocks in front of trailers located south of the Mason-Dixon. I can hardly wait!

Well I didn’t really think it was necessary, Elund, because I did not give a way the winner. But as they say in sex ed, better safe than sorry.

More American bashing?? Southern bashing?

I am in that extremely small group people that follow both NASCAR and profesional cycling with equal interest. It is amazing to me how much the two have in common from a fan’s perspective. The “I love/hate Lance” debate can’t hold a candle to the Jeff Gordon wars. That sprint finish with the headbutting looked just like a typical Bristol last lap. In both NASCAR and cycling, there are some teams that are always “lucky” and others that always seem to screw up. Even the sponsorship logos everywhere thing is the same. No one who follows NASCAR would be stupid enough to ask why Lance had his picture taken wearing a watch or why he had to put on the yellow jersey yesterday.

Also, in the US, there are a heck of alot more amateurs racing stock cars at the local fair grounds on Saturday nights than there are folks entering the local crit. Not all NASCAR fans are beer swilling fools. Alot of them are just as obsessed with when they can get their hands on Dale Jr.'s new protype helmet as we cyclists are in getting Lance’s latest Giro creation.
