Lbs rant, I swear bike shops don't want my money or something

warning, long rant follows, but really, I can’t take this anymore!

So, my road bike has 2 issues at the moment, it needs new wheels and it needs new gearing due to some races I’m entering (steep ascents).

I went to this lbs (supposedly one of the most reputable around) on Saturday, ask for the availability of the FSA aluminum compact crank, guy tells me he doesn’t have any in stock but will call me back on Monday about it, in the meantime we talk about wheels and I found out he is a builder, cool! I figure I can get both from him.

Monday arrives, he calls me back telling me FSA told him they’re backordered indefinitely on the crank, sucks, I call shop #2 which tells me they’ll ask and call me back by the end of the week (long time!).

In the meantime I do some research and figure that a triple would actually be best for me: actually go in person to shop #1 (same day) b/c I figure hey, they must have Shimano in stock, right, at this point I’m ready to order already.

In shop #1 guy tells me Shimano is backordered, they don’t have any and he’ll call and let me know. Grrr, put the c/c back in my pocked (figuratively speaking) and walk out.

Tuesday (talk about quick turnaround!) shop #2 calls me and tells me they have an FSA compact crank for me (they actually have 2, in 2 different sizes), so much for FSA being backordered, I tell them sorry, I decided to go for a triple and wait for shop #1 to call me back.

No call all day, I call them on Wed morning, guy tells me ‘he’s been busy and has had no time to call his suppliers’ (gee, thanks). Grrr, this morning (Thu) I call again and he tells me Shimano is out of triple ultegra crank and has no idea when they’re coming in.

In the meantime I figured, hey, I’m gonna change the whole drivetrain anyways, why not Campy (2004 chorus is sweet!)? Also found out next year’s Ultegra is likely 10sp (shop didn’t tell me even if it seems common knowledge, thanks for nothing). I call back the store and ask if they have Campy Chorus triple in stock, guy says yes, I say ok, I’m gonna come in on lunch break and order, guy says fine.

I get in practically c/c in hand, guy (which I think is the owner I guess) is fitting some customer and hands me off to an ‘assistant’, doesn’t tell the assistant anything, I have to re-explain what I want (campy chorus triple), assistant tells me they’re out of cranks and rear derailleurs and that unless they maybe find some in Quebec (?) they’ll be a month in coming… this is stressing me out but oh well, I ask for pricing and he quotes me US$1,500+tax+installation.

I had done some price research and what I had found was that the average MSRP seemed to be in the US$1,200-1300 range, and that several stores were around the US$1,100 mark, while some mail-order-only outfits even had it for $999 (!).

I ask the assistant about this discrepancy and if that’s the best price he can give me, as I’ve found some stores online that have things much cheaper: guy tells me first ‘we don’t compete with online stores’ and then ‘if you can find this for a better price I’m happy for you’ and basically cuts me off and makes it very obvious he doesn’t want to waste any more time with me, I turn around and get out and he doesn’t even say goodbye or anything.

I mean WTF, I’m here, ready to drop US$2,000 (there are also the wheels to consider) and you treat me like this? don’t even ask me WHICH stores have WHAT prices? treat me like crap even though you’re sitting at the cash register alone and there’s nobody else in the store?

I mean, man, am I asking too much? I’d just want a store that would treat me decently, have things in (reasonable) stock (or be able to get them) and not completely rip me off (of course one can’t compete with mail-order outfits, I wasn’t expecting that, but I’d have expected an effort to get closer to what other brick’n’mortar stores with an online presence are charging, or if they couldn’t at least haggle on installation fees, whatever, just don’t make me feel I’m talking to a brick wall).

For all I know Campy Canada might charge more than Campy USA, I’m not stupid, it happens, and if that’s the case hey, whatever, I’ll pay your price, but you have to TELL me these things, not act like it’s your way or the highway and basically make it obvious my presence in your store is not welcome since I uttered the ‘online’ word (blasphemy!).

Am I expecting too much? There’s no way I’ll ever step into store #1 ever again (la Bicicletta) and I’ll probably drive to store #2 (tri-action) this Saturday to see what I can do, even if I doubt they carry Campy so unless they have some Ultergra stock I’m SOL (and in any case now that I know that next year Ultegra moves to 10sp I’m kind of weary in investing full retail $ for a complete drivetrain that will be retired in some months).

That or I’ll have to drive down to the US somewhere where it seems that there are plenty of nice stores that don’t jerk their customers around: I sure wish Tom D’s store was closer to here…

ok, sorry for the rant but I really had to get this off my chest, thanks for listening and for any comments you might have.

Call Greg at store #2 and tell him what you want. If he can get his hands on it, he’ll hook you up. If he can’t, you can always try store #3, Campione. (8th @ Burrard) They stock a shitload of high end roadie stuff, and have a very nice store. I had a set of wheels built there and they’re well tentioned and dead true.

Man, what a drag. I can sympathize. If you’re set on the triple set-up, I’d suggest checking out Performance’s website (performancebike.com) - they’ve got 'em on sale ($125 USD for Ultegra). I’d recommend calling them before ordering, if you decide to go that way. I recently ordered a bunch of DA stuff from the website and found out later that some of the items were out of stock - seems DA is getting hard to come by. Hope they’re able to help you…they’ve always been good to deal with, both online and in person.

thanks, I’ll try #3 tonight (it’s very close to where I work). The problem with tri-action is that due to its location and hours I can’t get there during the week at all, anyways we’ll see…

Hey Mike you might want to consider getting a triple for Madison this year… !! GGW Hee Hee

You crack me up!! :-} Sorry to read about your bike troubles…hope it all gets squared away to your satisfaction a.s.a.p. We’re off to River to River tomorrow - gonna whup some ass on them hills down yonder. BTW - I’ll be riding a fixed-gear at Madison since I’m such a badass. You just make sure your rear brakes are in order this time!

Good Luck at R to R. It’s a great race and have fun. BTW I only have problems with my Front Brakes… Regards to all the runners. GGW

on the product availibility don’t get too mad at the shop as that’s just how it goes. supplier is out of stock and backordered and then up pops a piece or two and whoever calls first gets it. the bike shop that sponsors me does it’s best to get me parts and i’m even there when they call the suppliers but it’s kinda just getting lucky that gets you the parts. Just got lucky on a spankin new Cannondale Ironman 5000 waaay under cost, can’t get the 10spd chain or cassette but hey who needs 10 speed.

Believe me, I feel for yah. I went through the same shit last Summer/Fall with one lbs. I had purchased my 5200 from them and was getting jerked around on getting it serviced. The 5200 is their highest grade bike and sell maybe one per season. You would think that if you dropped $2000 on a bike that you could get it serviced. Well, they did nothing about it for about a month. I finally had enough and called Trek. They got on the phone and had the bike sent to them to fix it. In the mean time, a friend sent me to another mom and pop bike shop that is very well known but almost an hour and a hoalf away. I stop in one day and told them what I had and he said that he is willing to work on it and send it to Trek if he can not fix it, even though I had not purchased it from him. So I thought this is odd. Needless to say, Trek fixed it and I have not been back to lds#1. The funny thing is that lbs#2 now got the franchise dealer tag for the area away from #1, and all because of customer complaints. I went back to #2 this past Fall to have them build a Trek time trial for me. I simply went in with a list of things I wanted, much like you, and he was on the phone almost instantly tracking down the items. He was able to get me the tri DA10 spd group back in early November, way before most had seen it. This relationship has gotten to the point now when I walk in, the owner pushes away the rookies and ask’s what I need today, and usually with no down payment. Now that is a bikeshop!

Store #1 is not only a retail outlet, they are also a supplier (wholesaler) to a lot of other shops in the area. They should have had a better selection. I have dealt with them before Marco and will never go in there again.

How much was Greg selling the cranks for. I was thinking of getting a set for my tri bike. Do not have to reply about the price on here. Just email me about it.

I am in the same boat as you with the groupo selection. Until I read that Ultegra was going to 10 speed. I have decided to wait until Sept ? to get the new Ultegra for the TCR Zero and then switch my old Ultegra over to the Dual and the shifters over to my new Redline Conquest that I have on order.

Marco, I did a great ride last night up the hills out between 32nd anf 24th. First hill was 2km long at 10%, second hill was 2km long at 18% and the last hill was 2km at 14%. I tell you that takes a lot out of you. Need someone to suffer with.

I just went to the La Bicicletta website and they have 2004 Chorus listed at $1450 Canadian and as “in stock”. Makes you wonder if the proverbial “left hand” knows what the “right hand” is doing?

The website is for a store in Toronto with the same name. I don’t know that they are related in any way, although they might be.

they actually have a website? are you sure it’s the ‘la bicicletta’ in Vancouver? I’ve never seen their website but know there is a bicicletta store in Ontario that’s online…

1450 Canadian? That seems like a too-good-to-be-true price in some ways, as only mail-order outfits in the US had it for that price: I wonder if it includes really everything…

I ended up going to Campione cycles and I had a REALLY good experience, they were in stock of everything but the triple crank (to be expected, they had it in stock for Centaur but not Chorus) but they didn’t jerk me around (sales guy was VERY competent, ex track racer it seems) and even refused a down payment until they know for sure when they can get it in for me (they said 2 weeks but they’re supposed to call).

Their price is 1750 canadian for the whole gruppo (including hubs and brakes) which is definitely reasonable (this is not a ‘special’ price, it’s in full view in their store), I’m also getting the wheels built by them (open pro rims, bladed spokes in front, normal in back) for a pretty good price so I’m definitely a happy camper. The guy at the shop really didn’t like me getting a triple (he was trying to steer me on a compact) but I held tight to my guns (really, it makes sense for me IMHO).

“Marco in BC” … oops I guess I should have looked at your handle more carefully before posting. The website is for the Toronto store and I think that if you go to www.labicicletta.com you can see what is included in the group.

the groupset on the site doesn’t include the hubs so I guess the prices are pretty comparable… I most certainly hope that the guy who quoted me 1750 and told me that it DID include the hubs didn’t make a mistake  I guess we’ll see in a few days when I place the actual order.

Glad to hear it. I really like that shop, and use them for a good chunk of my roadie-specific gear. Greg is still THE MAN for tri stuff, but Coquitlam is a bit of a haul if you don’t live/work East. Their prices are surprisingly good, too.

Campione was the only shop in town that had track gear in stock when I was building my fixie. They’re serious dudes. You may also have noticed that the owner is the same guy in the Cramerotti brochure.

There was an article in one of the tri mags about the FSA compact crank. that sounds like the way to go for hilly courses.

I had a similar thing happen to me. Thought I should support my LBS. Ordered a set of Syntace clip-ons. They came in, I go to pick them up, ready to pay and the dude says $180.00 US. I about dropped a load in my shorts! I said somethiing like “ahem, is this price correct?”. The kid pulls out some monster book with every bike part known to aliens and man in it and shows me the price. Well dude…I said “Performance has the same thing for $120 bucks”. The kid goes away for quite a while…talking to or calling his racketeer manager I’m sure, and comes back and says “okay bud, how about $120 + $5 for shipping = $125”. Now, I was happy that I got a fair price - but, 3 yrs later I’m still pissed that they tried to take advantage of me. Dip-sticks!

So, you were upset that your local LBS, who doesn’t have nearly the volume as the large mail-order places, needs to charge a higher price to cover their overheads.

Perhaps they didn’t know that Performance was selling the same thing for a 33% discount on their suggested retail price.

Lastly, did you ask what the price would be before you ordered? They should have told you, but if you don’t take the initiative to find out that is your responsibility as well.

"FSA compact crank. that sounds like the way to go for hilly courses. "

Living in a hilly area, I’m 100% convinced of that, but not just FSA, Stonglight and Ritchey also make compact cranks.
