LBS issue

I drop off my Trek SP at lbs on Thursday April 3rd. I tell them I dont need it until Sunday April 13th. (This was all prearranged via the phone as well). I was away on vacation during this time so no rush. Simple tune up, replace cables and housing and throw on some bar tape.

They call me yesterday telling me there’s a rear brake issue and I need some small part. I say ok no prob. Guy says its a Trek specific part so it may take a week to get it etc… I say ok no prob. I get the bike its going on the trainer so no need for rear brakes. Part comes in I come back. Well then he calls me back saying he was trying to take the rear derailur (sorry spec.f.lling!) off and some bolt was broken? So he had to order that from a nearby Trek store and pick it ip etc…No big deal crap happens. Then he says Trek only gave him “part of what he was supposed to have”??? But he says he found another way around it and derailur is back on but the bike is ghost shifting! !

Prior to me dropping it off the ONLY issue was the rear brake cable needed replacing. So I figured I’d just replace all the cables and housing since its never been done since 2011.

The the guy calls back saying I may need a new derailur and/or there’s possible structure damage to the drop out possibly from the bike being used on a trainer.

Again, nothing was wrong with the bike other than the rear cable before j left it there. I’m not saying they sabotaged it nor do I think they are trying to screw me out of a few bucks but I’m at a loss? Never had anything like this before.

I went with a reputable shop BUT not the regular shop I would normally use. I did this cause I was eextremely pressed for time me due to going on vacation.

So the bike is at the shop and the guy said I can get it “as is” or have another wrench look at it but it could be mid week until I get it back.

So for the tune up, cables and housing, bar tape and I forgot they took the components off and cleaned them etc…it was estimated around 130-140.

But, do I pay this for a bike that I am picking up that isn’t shifting correctly, has a new part mixed with old parts and essentially the rear brake is not working. (I understand the rear brake cause the part is on order).

I feel like a jerk but I guess I am just going to tell the owner I am picking it up and going to the other shop I use so they get it right.

Sorry for grammatical errors typing on my phone.

They may not have done anything wrong. I work on my own bikes, and sometimes doing regular recurring maintenance reveals serious problems. Just because you didn’t notice any symptoms doesn’t mean nothing was wrong.

That said, take a Trek to a Trek dealer, a Cervelo to a Cervelo dealer, etc. That can end up being way more efficient. Even if you’re just expecting cable-and-housing replacement, they’ll know all the little tricks for doing Trek cable-and-housing replacement.

I hear ya on that part about regular maintenance reveals stuff…And I would have gone to Trek but this shop was 10 minutes away and I was really jammed for time. I guess next time I should plan better!

They sound a little disorganized but what they are saying is probably the truth. Let them fix it.

Was it Josh or Jason or Jeremy that worked on your bike? It’s all good…It is what it is…No worries, dude…Got any weed?

I’d pick up the bike as is and get a second opinion at a trek lbs. The current lbs might be right that the damage was there before, caused by trainer, etc. but it could also be their error. I’d like a second opinion just for piece of mind.
