A giant Russian LNG boat is on fire. Likely struck by a Ukrainian drone. If it explodes it will be the largest man made explosion ever.

As a mining engineering I like to watch things blow up. So that was underwhelming :winking_face_with_tongue:

It does demonstrate how vulnerable commercial shipping is to cheap drone attacks.

If Iran was to start targetting fuel tankers the financial and environmental costs could be disastrous.

One of the Russian war pundits I listen to seem to suggest that there are thousands of these tankers out there, so that while something like this is spectacular, or a western country seizing one of them, it’s a drop in the bucket. Main effect may be to drive up insurance costs, essentially making them uninsurable.

The message here is: if you transport Russian gas or oil, you will lose your ship. These tankers, size depending, can cost well over 150 million dollars. Shipowners don’t want to lose their ships.

Finding crew will also become problematic. Pay is big but so is the explosion.

Yeah, it’s not so much the sinking or seizing of a few of these ships that will hurt the Russians per se, it’s the knock on effect of ships being unwilling to carry their oil.
