I’ve seen a number of videos of Russians surrending only to be shot down by their own side or hit with a drone.
Or they get injured and decide their best option going forward is to swallow a bullet on the spot.
Literally hundred plus of those videos now. Either a bullet to the head or a grenade. I guess there is no reasonable prospect of getting assistance so either death now or a slow death over hours or days.
Works very effectively to make your soldiers go forward. Pokhrovsk is about to fall. Price? Irrelevant.

I can’t remember which pundit I saw say this but his thoughts were the point of all of this slaughter is just to show the West that Russia will not stop, so they might as well stop backing Ukraine. The territorial gains are on such a small scale as to be meaningless.
It was one of the youtube analysts, I think from Denmark. He posts now and then, but his talk is really good.
