Latest and Greatest HRM+GPS+Foot Pod

I’ve been getting back into running and was getting curious about metrics.

The last time I was in the game, the Garmin 305 was all the rage. I’m sure that’s changed a lot.

I’d like an independent watch-like device (that doesn’t depend on my cell phone) that can:

  • Export out to my computer and make pretty HRM charts and maps.
  • Capture GPS info when I’m outside
  • Has a foot pod for when I’m on a treadmill.

Do not care to use this for daily wear to replace my POS Tag Hauer, just for exercising.

Thanks.

New Garmin 920xt will do all of this. No need for the foot pod anymore either. That being said. I will still use my 310XT until it forces me to replace it with something else.

No need for the foot pod anymore either.

no shit… wtf. Will check it out.

Added note:

So the watch itself tracks foot bounes/etc for a treadmill?

And is the HRM in the watch or does it require a strap?

How long does GPS lockin take?

Yeah I believe it track arm movement. Yes it still needs a heart rate monitor.

Based on my experience with Fenix 2, the indoor tracking leaves much to be desired. It’s anywhere from :30 to 2:00 off. Foot pod is still the way to go.

Cadence works indoors without the HRM Run strap, but to get vertical oscillation and ground contact time you need the strap.

As for accuracy, it can be calibrated to be more accurate, but it is close enough for me.

There is no manual calibration for running without the footpod, I wish there was, for me the 920 on a treadmill reads 2km/hr too fast.

If it is just for running, get the garmin 620 instead. For one, it is available. Also, it does everything you ask as well nearly everything as the 920, but $150 cheaper.

Check here for a side by side comparison: DCR

These both of course assume that you actually want all the new features. You could get everything you asked for with a much, much cheaper watch. I forget which, but one of the ~$120 garmins supports ANT+ footpod and HR, maybe the FR10? Also, the 310 and 610 are awesome watches as well and both fit your criteria.

Not sure how long you’ve been out of the game.
