Lateral 'play' in Powertap SL Hub?

Not sure how I missed this but I have a PT Hub (carbon windows, wired) newly built into a Zipp 440 that has obvious lateral play on both sides if I gently move it while it’s in the bike.

I’ve made sure the cassette & skewer are on tight so that’s not the issue.

I’m thinking the cartridge bearings or axle end nuts?

Anybody else have one that did this? What did you to do fix it?

Crap, I just noticed this too on my powertap pro+. Enough that it rubs the rear brake when I climb out of the saddle.

SL hubs don’t have lateral play… meaning axial motion of the hub body relative to the axle.

Can you clunk the rim back and forth with light pressure? If not, then it’s the way it’s supposed to be. They do not make very laterally stiff wheels. If so, you must have loose axle/bearing radial clearance or NDS bearing is shot… it almost always dies first.

The axle itself was moving back & forth inside the hub. I took the cassette off & hand tightened, done.

I owned a Wired SL and two Wireless SL 2.4 hubs and for all three I’ve had to replace the 12mm alloy axle with a steel axle to get rid of the lateral play. Problem solved but considerable weight added.

I just hand tightened the end nut; I assume it just always comes loose? I have threePT wheels of this vintage and only one does this though.

For some reason I was thinking it was an SL+. I have one and it has carbon windows also. Completely different axle design.
