Late 1980s - early 2000s Race Videos Online

I’ve been converting all my old VHS recordings of races to digital format. These include a wide assortment of races from local Michigan to international Ironman events. Although I’ve done this mainly to preserve my collection, I’ve uploaded many of these vids to YouTube at the channel called Vault of Piscis Magnus because I thought others might like to view them for inspiration during long indoor trainer rides, for a trip down memory lane, or for just plain fun. I’ve made no attempt to edit content or improve the quality of the recordings, so there will be commercials (if a televised recording) and some VHS recording artifacts. There are 16 recordings there now, and I hope to add another 10 - 20 within the next couple of weeks. Anyway, hope you get as much enjoyment from them as I have.

fantastic!

hey i’m the first viewer of 1994 Ironman Hawaii!!!

Score.

I’ll download these for the cold winter in the basement on the trainer.

Awesome, thank you!

thanks for sharing, appreciate that.

i have quite a few tapes it would be good to convert, only problem is most have visible mold growing on them through he front viewing window.

i’ve wound them back and forwards with some cleaning action success, any other options which might work better?

actually, my main problem is converting them. i’m pretty clueless as to options available, any advice appreciated.

'95 hawaii was a favorite to watch on the trainer back in the 90’s. love the bike to run segment and then mark allen run segment with those great tracks from joe satriani.

whenever i play the album js (it’s a good one, great band, blues rock feel), the pictures, emotions felt etc., return with real clarity from the '95 coverage. powerful stuff.

thanks again.

You and the previous posters are all welcome! Thanks for the name of the guitarist – I had forgotten who it was. I really enjoy the history of the sport, good and not so good, and these recordings (warts and all) make it live again for me. The 1989 epic IM Hawaii will go up this weekend. It might be that one, or another one coming up, that was telecast on a brutal winter day here in Michigan. The local TV channel scrolled winter storm warnings across the screen during the race while guys wearing not much more than a grimace raced along the Queen K.

Mrs. The Herminator gave me the Elgato Video Capture device for Christmas. It’s very simple to set up and easy to use. All you need is a VHS player and a computer. As for videotape tech, I’m not your guy. There are a few STers who post in the Lavender Room who seem to know a lot about video film stuff, so they might help. And there’s always Google. Good luck!

I don’t often use the word, “hero”. But you, sir, are a hero.

Thanks, Herminator!

To all - is there a way that I can download these youtube vids onto my harddrive, and then watch them at a later time, when I may not have an internet connection? I guess I’d need both a way to download, and then a player that will play whatever format it has been saved as. If this is better discussed via PM, I would welcome advice. Gracias.

Thanks. That should help pass the time on the trainer this winter.

Thanks alot. Your videos will help me get through the winter. These are awesome.

You and all others who posted are welcome! I’m glad you all can enjoy them as much as I have. I’ll upload more early 90s races today, followed by late 90s/early 2000s recordings over the next week. Rock Chalk!

John VanDerSloot, that’s a name I haven’t heard in many years. Thanks for the footage!

You’re welcome! I never knew or even met John. I just remember he won races outright in the early 90s in the midwest when he was in his early 20s and I think I remember him going sub 4 hours at the Muncie Endurathon (half IM) in 1994. It was around that time he announced he was turning pro. Within a year or so after that he was diagnosed with a serious illness (leukemia, lymphoma, something like that). One of many whose star in the sport shined brightly and unfortunately too briefly. I’m sure every state (and country, for that matter) has legendary age-groupers that many still talk about.

This is awesome. Already looking forward to this upcoming week on the CompuTrainer. Thanks!!!

Wow! Great job!
What a great collection and an amazing transfer job you have done!
My lonely trainer w.o will be much more interesting now.

Any chance of getting 1987?

Once again, thank you sir!!!

This is great!
