I’ve considered LASIK for the past ten years, but have always been so scared that the risk of being in the 0.1% (or whatever it is) of people who have somethign go wrong wasn’t worth it. Well, I think I’ve finally decided that I’m willing to take that risk. Two questions:
- Any recommendations for where to go in the greater NYC area (I’d be willing to drive up to an hour an half)?
- Am I being stupidly paranoid for considering having only one eye done at a time so that if soemthing goes wrong with the first procedure I just use contacts in the other eye and don’t risk the second one?
I’m not a refractive surgeon, but I work for a cataract/refractive surgery publication and collaborate with surgeons on a daily basis. I would suggest you check out Eric Donnenfeld. Here is his Web site: http://www.lasikli.com/
Dr. Donnenfeld is not only a superb surgeon, but he is also extremely friendly and an all-around great guy. I’d certainly trust my eyes to him. He’ll be able to give you the proper advice and care.
x2 I went to this guy back in 2001 on the advice of a friend that used him as well (she’s a doctor too). I have never been happier. He won’t try to sell you his service. He’ll be honest if you are not a good candidate. He was more expensive than most, but well worth the $$. I’m not sure if he still offers it, but I have a lifetime of free adjustments if my eyes ever change (so far, so good).

I’d recommend Dr. James Kelly. He has an office in NYC & Garden City, ny. http://www.kellylaser.com/index.html
I went to him based on a coworker’s recommendation who had gone to him herself as well as some of her family members. I had gotten a few recommendations for Drs, but like you, I was nervous. What made me ultimately choose him was when She told me about the day she went in for her consultation. While she was in the waiting room, a guy came out and said to her, if you are a lasik candidate go with him. This guy had gone to Dr. Kelly for a second opinion. He had gotten a consultation from 1 doctor who told him who was a perfect candidate. When he went to Dr. Kelly, he was told he was not a good candidate for the surgery. I have heard of stories where Drs have told patients that they are a great candidate for the surgery and are not.
Also, Dr. Kelly had gotten Lasik done himself.
