Laptops & pool security

I’ve been pondering this for a while now, trying to figure out the best way to keep my laptop secure if I want to incorporate a swim workout on the way to or from work. Like many people, I carry a laptop with me most of the time. Leaving it at work just isn’t a option, and I’d really rather not double back all the time. I need a way to be able to secure my bag while at the pool, so I know it won’t be (easily) jacked. Pool lockers are notoriously easy to break into, and leaving it in the car isn’t an option when I’m bike commuting. Even when I do drive, my car doesn’t have a lockable trunk.

Enter the Pacsafe

A lockable, high-tensile steel “exoskeleton” that slips over the bag and secures to any secured object. You can snug it down pretty tight and loop the excess cable to further “stitch the opening closed” if you’re so inclined. I just tested it on my courrier bag and it seems to be just what I’ve been looking for. I can now lock my bag to the guard’s chair or something secure on-deck and swim without having to worry about someone snatching my laptop.

NB: I’ve read reports that the padlock that comes with these things are keyed fairly weakly, and have heard at least one story of a Pacsafe key opening a different padlock than the one with which it came paired. I’d invest the $10 in a new lock just to be safe.

that pretty good. thanks

That is a really cool idea. I have no idea if it works, but the laptop I just bought has Lojack-style device in it that apparently will send a GPS Blip when activated. But I would rather that be a function I never have to use. Cool!

Bernie

that’s pretty cool. Here we can’t even leave the dog tied to a tree without the possibility of having him stolen-we have to lock everything up or it’s gone.

I think your dog would be pretty pissed if you put him in one of those

LOL-you’re right!

It kind of screams to me “there is something in the backpack worth stealing!”

That is very true. Unfortunately, at least in Vancouver, I’m fairly certain that without it my bag *would *get stolen. Or at least rifled through and all the “good stuff” taken - but I have a pretty nice bag that I’ve recently learned is almost trendy so those bastards would probably jack that too.

Then I’d have to worry about jonnyo stealing it…

A gal at work used this and it worked. The lo jack activates when they first access the net. They don’t even know it is on the system. Her’s was riped off by a house keeping person off her desk. Great invention.
