“I returned to the Tour this year and I noticed something very strange… All of a sudden all the guys that I used to beat were giving me a hard time on the hills. It was hard to stay with the peloton and I did at times but it wasn’t easy at all. My time trial skills were the same, but yet others were performing a lot better. As you know I’m the most tested athlete in today’s sports… so there shall be no doubt in anybody’s mind that I’m clean this year. Something smells fishy on this tour. The guys must be on some new drug that I’m not aware or the TDF is letting them get away with it so that they can beat me. Now I understand what Greg Lemond meant after his last Tour.”
