bag the socks and save about 30 sec!

He needs to work on his dismount too.
Of course he still would have gotten second.
And what’s with wearing black when he knew it was going to be so hot?
That was a sad T2. yes, would’ve still got second… but maybe by only 20s…

He had two non-aero water bottles too.
He’s just completely lost without us!
I think he should have walked through the aid stations to help him take in a bit more fluids. Also, the brief periods of walking would have saved his legs a bit. He probably could have held onto first until the finish if he had done that.
That sounds like an endurance nation strategy… Walk your way to victory
You write a lot of good stuff but that one was wide right and I think you know it
.
I would also be concerned that he started too hard on the bike. He should have slowed down, to allow his body time to adjust from all that swimming. My guess it completely threw his nutrition off. And I heard his heart rate monitor wasn’t working. It was reading a little high. Otherwise he probably would have run harder towards the end of the race if he knew he had some extra heart rate to spare. Rumor has it he wishes he had 3 Ensure in the morning instead of the two he did have.
Can’t wait to read his race report.
Hope he comes and hangs out here on slowtwitch for a while. Should help him correct his rookie mistakes.
C’mon man, humor. Obviously you can’t walk to victory and you know en intvals are hard.
probably lost another 10-15 seconds here…2003 tdf repeat

Or 3-5 watts faster on the bike? On the other hand he’s older than dirt and beat all but one guy. Props to Lance. He did a great race all things considered.
guys, check out the Panama 70.3 breakdown thread. Monty breaks it down pretty well. Lance missed the first pack on the swim and missed a chance to get pulled along by a hungry french guy who led the whole bike instead of Lieto.
Biking harder (3-5 watts)… 5 watts would have netted him 45 seconds over 90km. He would have needed 10-15, and at his wattage we’re talking about creeping up from half IM watts to OD watts and walking the last 5km. Still wouldn’t have mattered.
As monty pointed out, Lance needed to find free speed within his abilities, and making the lead pack and then having the benefit of riding with the bike leader would have mattered way more than 5 more watts on the bike.
As Lance rightly points out in his interview, it’s all about the run, which is all about the bike. In the end it was “endurance”, plain and simple. Lance needed one or two more miles of 5:45 instead of 6:30 at the end there. Lance also hinted at his weight, and compared to a lean Docherty, this had to hurt him in that heat. He has a big surface area comparatively.
In the end I think it’s the things Lance can control that he’ll focus on… his weight, his run endurance, and as Monty pointed out, his swim speed and tactics.
His bike fitness is already in the barn.
Yes he looked a tad chubby. Compare him to Docherty…
well, I wouldn’t go so far as to say chubby, just big. Surface area is just as much a part of the equation as body fat. Maybe more so, ask a heat science guy. Plus, it’s 30sec/mile on the run for every extra lb. Lance drops 5 lbs he’s giving Docherty a run for his money in that last 1km.
I bet his suit was ‘cold black’ fabric.
…30sec/mile on the run for every extra lb.
ok, you just convinced me to put my ice cream spoon down

I know you meant 3 not 30 but here is my math. Say he currently weighs 160lbs. If he loses 5 lb that’s 5/160 = 3.125% 1:17 X .03125 = 00:02:24
and that would make for an easy win at least in math land.
Hugh
I run with LA on occasion and it always hits me just how much bigger he is than I am (he is quite thick in the torso). I am only about 140, and I would say LA is high 160s/low 170s at the moment. I could be off but I am sure he will try to cut a few pounds as he works his way to Kona.
just because things like sox take time, doesn’t mean they also don’t save time.
Sox can save slower running, by not blistering, for example.
Back in 1998 a friend from CA did IMNZ with me. Later he ran a 2:35 LA marathon, but at IMNZ he ran in racing flats with no sox. The next day at the awards, he had his shoes off and was tearing sheets of skin off his feet. Virtually the entire heel, sole and instep of both feet got ripped off and bandaged. 30 seconds putting on some sox, would have saved him a long walk that day!
And PNF at Kona years ago. She saved plenty of time by skipping aid stations when Karen Smyers was hunting her down. She stayed ot front for a bit longer, but eventually melted down not far from the finish. I think she walked it in for 4th place (getting passed on the carpet, for 3rd) Hydrating properly saves time, and so too can sox.
Maybe Lance knows to wear sox to prevent blisters, and that’s his fastest way to the finish line.
