Lance Armstrong confirms Kona 2012

Now what.

Better start testing him for drugs.

God I hope he doesn’t bugger up triathlon like his controversies have cycling.

He didn’t say Kona specficially
.

interesting too that Ullrich have been posting some pretty fast swim and run splits on Facebook lately
.

He said an Ironman not Kona.

It COULD be kona but we still don’t know.

LA was alluding to joining Panama 70.3 to get his feet wet again in the triathlon scene. He can build up points with the end goal of joining Kona - unlikely though if you ask me.

Pretty sure that if Lance would get a Kona celebrity entry number, just like Herschel Walker back in the day. Good for publicity… good for ratings…

Can I just point out that his position is very high in the front? That guy must know nothing about bikes. I mean, no way he goes fast like that.

This is all conjecture at this moment because he may or may not do Kona still. And yes WTC will give any celeb of that stature an spot into their race.

The interesting dynamic though is how WTC can best capitalize on the Lancefest. A few years ago when the Pro qualifying system came about they had a “wild card” rule and some of the pro’s were upset with it because they were worried that it would essential be the “Lance rule” that would allow WTC to pluck Lance on the start line with fresh legs. WTC sided on fairness and essentially said it wouldnt allow anyone on the start line in that fashion.

My guess is that in order for WTC to totally capitalize on the Lance factor, he has to be a position where he can smash the bike and “lead” Kona. That can only happen in the Pro start because the AG/mass start is too far behind the Pro’s (I think it’s 20-30 mins afterwards). With that being said, I certainly dont see a guy of Lance’s nature/stature chasing points to make the pro cut off list. It’ll essentially be on WTC to come up with some magic ruling to have him up front (which they certainly can, it’s their race, they could put him in the front and tell everyone to kiss off~their race, their rules).

quit being harshing the Jan’s buzz.

This site says Panama this weekend:

There are 2 types of pro triathletes-the ones that want Lance on the start line in Kona… and the idiots.

Thank you.

And take a good look at his water bottle at the back… Horizontal, just like Sindballe… When will the other guys learn?

And the one behind his leg on the frame…

No way he goes fast without a 1080/disc…

Well played by both organizations.

I’ll give Lance credit, if he’s truly trying to qualify through the points system, best of luck to him! I think it’s a great way of respecting the sport and the pro’s.
