So,… since my last thread has wandered into the literary netherworld of pop stars, feminism, Tom’s (many, many) issues with women, Christina Aguillera, and who knows what else, I thought I would ask:
I am still wondering–a source told me Lance and his singer friend Sheryl are now splitsville; does anyone know (even somewhat?) for sure if this is true or not?
C’mon let’s get real. This is/was a celebrity relationship. I love Sheryl’s music but she’s also ten years older than Lance. Quite a number of Hollywood female celebrities as of late when they hit their 40’s have been taking on younger “boy toy” boyfriends in order to give themselves a public youthful hot image and extend the lives of their careers. Madonna started the trend and actually coined the phrase “boy toy”. This is because that traditionally Hollywood tended to get rid of celebrity female sex symbols once they hit the age of 40.
This is nothing new in Hollywood because aging male stars used to do the same thing with younger women in order to extend their careers. It’s just that as of late the shoe has been on the other foot.
Time for Lance to get back on the bike and start seriously training.
"So, Cerveloguy, would that be like robbing the cradle for you? "
Well, I guess that might be my 2nd marriage since she’s 36 and I’m 53.
I think what you’ve got to look at is mammalian biology. Despite what some of us want to believe, we’re still very much a part of the animal kingdom.
When I was a 17 yr high school kid my hard on was Rachel Welch. She was then ten yrs older than me and the ultimate erotic Hollywood goddess. Sorry, but it’s just not the same feeling now.
Aeromon, you, funny. You make mammal laugh, ahrrrrrrr. How should mammal know Aeromon, if mammal boinks from past near-retard, full-retard, or no-retard?
LC
I dunno, Larry. But judging from your post you either know quite a bit about retardation or intoxication. Or is it just pre-Californiaman nerves?
In response to the original question, I wouldn’t think they’ve split up. At least based on the fact that when I rode Alp d’Huez last saturday and ran into Lance at the top (now THERE was a surprise!!) Sheryl was there as well joking around with him and the rest of the team. So unless something’s happened this week they seem to still be together.
Well, maybe my source was just repeating a rumor that he heard…
A question (somewhat unrelated) for you: are you from France or were you just traveling? How do rate the Alp d’Huez as a climb? Typically where do you start (intersection/highway/village/etc.)?; how many km or miles from your starting point to the top?; how many (net) meters or feet do you end up climbing over the ride?; what is the elevation at the top?; for your particular ride, how long does it take to ride up and scream down?; anything else interesting about the ride?
Lance was asked about Sheryl yesterday after his stage victory:
Asked if he will join rock star girlfriend Sheryl Crow in Cannes, where she was spotted at the film festival Saturday, Armstrong said: “Will I go to Cannes? No, no. She will come here.”
I’m lucky enough to be studying abroad in Grenoble right now, so for about 6 months I’m living here. There are a couple of different ways to do l’alp d’huez (i’m sure francois can help me if i make any mistakes on this one). The easiest is to drive to Bourg d’Oisans (elev. 750m) which is the village at the base of the climb. From there you follow the signs and the climb starts right outside the city. It’s 13km long and very consistent, and most of the french triathletes I swim with don’t consider it to be very hard (of course, that’s in comparison to the thousands of other climbs they’ve already done, for me it was damn hard!). All the switchbacks are flat, so you get a little break, and the rest is about 9% grade all the way up. If you finish where the tour always does, you finish at 1850 meters, but you can continue on another 300m up to ~2100m if you want too.
For a student like me, I had to take the old fashioned way of getting there and ride. starting in Grenoble (elev. 200m), you have to go south to Vizille and from there you take a long straight shot on highway N91 (i think that's the number) all the way to bourg d'oisans. In all it was a 110km round trip, with about 2000m of climbing. For someone like me who rarely rides over 80km it was an eternity. It took me 5 hours round trip of just riding time (not including my regular breaks), and the climb up l'alp d'huez took about 80 minutes of really slow riding in a 30/26. That's really slow though, and my guess is if you do it fresh it will take anywhere from 55 to 70 minutes to do (i.e. the time most of the locals do it in). the decents 20 minutes and be careful on the switchbacks.
Besides the beautiful scenery, and obviously running into lance, the nicest thing for me ended up being the grocery store at the bottom of the climb!! boy did i need some more water after that one. But seriously, there are always people at the top to talk to, and they were very nice even though the town is dead right now since ski season is over. The highway is somewhat narrow, so be careful riding on it. Other than that, it’s a beautiful ride and i’m really lucky to have gotten to do it. especially now before it gets so hot!! I think anyone can get up it as long as they make sure to use the right gearing, and the pavement is nice so it is one of the only decents here that hasn’t scared the shit out of me (french backroads are so crappy I think i decend as fast as I climb).

That is a great ride, especially coming back–downhill the entire way. We did it last year in 100F weather which was lots of fun.
Also, if you are still in Grenoble on Bastille Day, last year they had a great fete in the park with food, drink and a band that was still rocking on when I left about 4AM.
