Going to Lake Tahoe in October for a wedding and have never been before. I think I am staying at the Sunshine Hotel. Is it worth bringing my bike and staying for a few days? Good places to ride, run an/or swim? Any trail running? If so, where? Anything else cool to do in the area? Thanks in advance.
Take your bike for sure. Ride from South Lake Tahoe up Luther Pass then go down the back side and head to Monitor Pass. Turn around at the summit of Monitor and retrace your path to South Tahoe. This was the route for the 100 mile ride at World’s Toughest Tri when I did it in 1993. If you break 6 hours for this hundred miler you are doing well. I think my split was 6:05. Bring a variety of clothing as it can range from stinking desert style hot to cold and possible rain/snow (they actually had snow at the race in 1992 in mid Aug) at the summit of Monitor. Its too bad that Charlie Lincoln no longer puts on this race. It was one of the best events that I ever raced in. Do take your bike to Tahoe as well as your running shoes.

lake tahoe is very beautiful. should be lots of options depending which part of the lake perimeter you will be. nevada part of tahoe has casinos if you’re into that. also interesting event from 7th to 10th if you are there at that time:

probably should still be fine for swimming and i think there were several public beach areas. as for places to bike, i’d look up a local bike store and call them up for recommendations.
take your bike, shoes and wetsuit…!!!
take everything!!!
it’s a wonderful place
there’s a bungy jump there somewhere too

If you are interested in Mountain Biking Tahoe is heaven. There are a few places you can rent MTB’s as well, but I don’t remember them off hand. There is a trail called Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride that can only be described as an epic adventure, around 18 miles, technical, beautiful, extremely fast at times. Ton’s of other options for the road bike, and endless trail runs (if you don’t mind a bit of climbing). Check out the site below, it looks pretty comprehensive, although I just checked it out briefly. Ton’s of cheap paperbacks with info once your up there. I’m going for Labor day and can’t wait.
Not sure what the dates are, but I remember seeing some kind of three day race in early October (trifind.com?) if that suits you. Like the folks pointed out - its an athlete’s tasters choice - enjoy. BTW, I’d also pack for any kind of weather - it could be 80 or it could be snowing.
it’s held in conjunction with the lake tahoe marathon. it’s a multi sport week of events including cycling, swimming, kayaking, and for those ultra endurance types, a triple marathon event over 3 days.
You will be so bummed if you don’t bring your bike!
Hey Larry,
Ever get to Cafe Bernardo?
I went to law school in Sac and the thing I miss most are the restaurants.

Bring your mountain bike… The Flume trail out of Incline Village (North shore in NV) is absolutely the BEST mountain biking on the planet in my opinion. 5 feet wide with a cliff up on one side, and a 2000 foot drop to the lake on the other side. This is the Xterra USA bike course, 23 miles of utter pleasure. Also, the water temp is fairly chilly (60 degrees) but it’s clear like the Caribbean. We stayed in Incline Village & swam off the Hyatt beach during late September. Possible to swim sans-wetsuit but probably not for long.
Trail Running is awesome. I spent the summer of 02 up there and trained for my first marathon that fall. I highly reccommend running along fallen leaf road (beautiful veiws of the lake). At the end of the road there are a couple trail heads if memory serves. Pick up a trail map when you get into town and you’ll find more trails then you could possibly cover.
