I am planning to race the Xterra there the end of August. I want to bring the whole fam damily but am looking for a hotel right down town that offers 2 living spaces (I have 15 month old twins). I checked Northwoods and there suites were full I believe.
Any clues?

Try the Golden Arrow. I’ve stayed there 2x’s. You might be able to get two rooms right next to eachother.

We have been to LP twice and had great success renting through this site. You might be able to find a house or condo which is so much better when travelling with small children.
Check out Town House Lodge. It has double rooms, is very reasonable and is located just over the hill on the Saranac Lake side of Placid. Town is well within walking distance, even Monday morning the day after IMLP.
x2 on the Golden Arrow. I was just there for IMLP and snuck a peak at a suite, it was huge. Your wife and kids will love the beach too.
I hear the arguements about a house/condo but my wife doesn’t feel like she’s on vaca when she has to clean dishes, cook etc.
Maid service keeps her happy and the central location of the GA can’t be beat.
Oh, and the Northwoods is dump so you’re not missing anything there. I stayed there for training camp last year. It was fine for that. My wife wouldn’t last an hour there though.
Hey Kurt - I did a house rental for my parents and family - I can’t find the sight, but they were a RE agent on Main Street - think it was something like Lakeplacidrentals.com. Got a sweet house, 4 BRs, full kitchen, laundry, deck, BBQ just 10 minutes from downtown - cost was ~$3000 for the week, but that was prime fleecing season during IM. If I can find the details I will send them your way.

Highly recommend the following unit - http://www.adkbyowner.com/listings/VR6207.html. Saranac Lake was a great town. Try the Eat n’ Meet Grill http://www.eatnmeet.com/. Misty Mountain ice cream is good but Donnely’s - http://adirondackvacations.blogspot.com/2007/09/donnellys-ice-cream.html is even better north of Saranac Lake.

Check out the High Peaks Resort at the end of Main Street. Recently redone and quite nice. They have suites ro large rooms right on the lake and next to pool so your wife and kids can hang while you do your thing. Just stayed there for IMLP and was very pleased.
Golden Arrow is also decent as others have said, but I think HP is about the same per night and it’s much nicer.
X3 Golden Arrow - simply can’t be beat for an in town location on the water. My family loved it- pool, hot tub, lake, kayaks, canoes, they even have beach toys, with shopping and food at your doorstep.
