Anybody familiar with the resturants here and have some recommendations about your favorite place? I’ll be here for 6 days along with my family so any suggestions would greatly be appreciated. Please included any wonderful “carb-loading” resturants that you’ve found. Thanks in advance! dave
The Lake Placid Pub & Brewery is decent. I’ve also dined at the Fireside Steak House, Goldberries, and Nicola’s…no complaints, but the options are somewhat limited up there.
there’s a great fish place out in wilmington (about 10 minutes away - on the bike course). i think they catch the fish in the backyard. it’s super fresh and last year, they made me ironman pasta the night before the race. i wish i could rememeber the name…
I had a couple of nice meals at a place right across from the ice rink. I think it was called Jack Frost. Nothing fancy, but good food and good value.
Mikes is good for Pizza and Pasta
Tail of the pup out towards Saranac Lake is good
Black Bear near the church for breakfast.
check out the japanese place (Akai I think) next to Mike’s Pizza (whihc is good too) and opposite from High Peak’s Cyclery - good sushi
the country bear out in Wilmington is rumored to be reopened - great for breakfast and lunch (closed after 2pm) and right on the bike course
Wilderness Inn in Wilmington and the Hungry Trout along the IM course are good choices as well
there’s also a couple new restaurants righ opposite the ice skating ring that opened late last year (steak house, pasta, asian if I remember right)
for sandwiches or breakfast also check out Sourdough on main street on the way out of town (after Placid Planet and before you get to the Tops supermarket)
also in Saranac Lake has a couple places around main street
.
I think the Mirror Lake Inn has the best food in town. The Brewery and Nicola’s are also very good.
Had a wonderful time at Goldberries if I remember, which was very kid friendly if you have kids… Went for an early dinner and they actually had a play area for kids to get up and play with dozens of toys. Allowed the adults to kick back and have some drinks. I think this is only available during the early bird’s time, for I’m sure they get busy and need the room for tables.
Black Bear for breakfast, just up from the swim start.
My kid’s love Mustard/Custard & Brew - right across from Placid Planet - The Black Bear is my wife’s favorite for breakfast or lunch (great soup) - Mirror Lake for a nice dinner on the deck!
On the course - I always stop at A&W in Willmington for a Chilli Dog on the second lap of the bike - On the run - The Down Hill Grill and or the Lake Placid Brewery for a cold one (second lap only) Z
Black Bear for breakfast
Nicolas is good
There is a Greek Resturant just past LP Coffee Shop (looks like a space ship) that is very good
.
a coney dog on the second bike loop? and a nice cold one on the second run lap? wow, can’t say i’ve trained with that but damn if that doesn’t sound good! the wheels are turning! dave
Coffee go round…up the hill from the Ramada for morning wake up…
Black Bear for early eats…
Ben & Jerrys for treats…
Mr. Mikes is good…
there is a pizza place by the slice that is under the big white 3 story hotel that is on the main drag…
Goldberries or what ever it was is good too…
Northwoods Inn was not as good at all last year for some reason…
Race day, friends and family can go to the Down the Hill grill…
All the places mentioned previously are good. Tail of the Pup in particular for BBQ, but NOT carb loading or the night before the race.
Another good spot is Joey’s. Recommended by locals. Lakeside of Main St down by the movie theatres. Nice view of the lake from the main dining room.
also check if Freestyle reopened - used to be a great little restaurant just next to the EMS store down towards the water
.
Did the Coffee Round reopen? It was awesome in 2000 and 2001 but since then it seemed to go down hill. I thought it was even closed last year.
Goldberries has a great breakfast buffet, which will seem especially outstanding Monday morning!
Go to Jimmy's on Main St down near the Hilton. I started going there for happy hour back in the eighties, stayed for dinner in the back room and found out the food was great. Now it's been remodeled with three levels and you can get a table right next to the water all the way down at the 1st level and the food is still great! When I was finishing up the run in '99 I was dreaming of a greasy cheese steak sandwich at Casey's, it would have been just what I needed after that race, but what did I find out? Casey's was out of business.
Jimmy’s is good for carbo-loading.
A couple of other places that haven’t been mentioned -

HoJo’s for breakfast. This is one of the few remaining HoJo restaurants (see http://www.roadsidefans.com/hojo.html for an extensive chronicling of the history of the chain). I highly recommend the blueberry pancakes. Order off the menu instead of going to the buffet - it’s worth it (the buffet may only be open Sunday, in which case you won’t have to worry about that :-).

I have to mention that, if you like bratwurst, the Chalet restaurant at the Swiss Acres Inn (http://www.swissacres.com/The%20Chalet.htm) is your spot. The Wiener Schnitzel is supposed to be good as well - both come with warm German potato salad and red cabbage for carbs. I had the bratwurst before Tupper Lake this year (as a Wisconsin ex-pat, I rarely get the chance). No ill effects
