For those that have stayed out of LP. How hard is to drive back and forth to the race site, both on race day and non race day?
KC
I found it very easy because of the way the parking lots were organised. There are large designated parking areas outside of the core part of town, and these have a shuttle bus to the transition area (although the distance that you’re being shuttled is very short.) As a result, you’re not stuck on one side of the course trying to cross and waiting for bikes and runners. If you don’t plan on parking in those lots, then it’s a totally different story. Most roads leading in and out of LP are fine,e ven while the race is on.
From where? Once the race starts…if you dont have a helicopter you are not getting into town. If you stay anywhere within LP proper you have nothing at all to worry about.
Very easy everything is within short distances!
I have stayed in town, Wilmington and Saranac Lake, and will be Wilmington again this year. I find it fairly easy to find parking just a few blocks from everything, both on race morning and the surrounding days. If coming from Saranac, i park on the side roads behind the Corne Plaza on the hill. From Wilmington I just find a spot not to far from mirror lake. Just a little bit of walking.
In town is the best option, but the outer areas are fine. Placid is awesome…
I’ll have my wife and 2 children with me so LP is preferable but I can’t find anything reasonably priced. Most I’ve found are around 2,000. Do you have any suggestions. I’m looking forward to the race but the accomodations are becomming a problem.
Thanks, KC
We are considering Wilmington. Do they close the roads, specifically 86? Also interested in LP if anyone has any leads. We can spend a bit higher to be there.
What do you all call reasonable?
Yes 86 inbound to LP is closed on race day.
It always depends, but I would expect to have to pay north of 2k to be in placid.
I’d love to stay in LP. Do you know of any place under 1500.00.
KC
Good luck. I just booked my lodging a few days ago and had a really hard time finding something in LP so late in the game…granted it was for 6 people but I did find something.
if you stay behind lp (towards the actual lake placid), then you can just drive to one of the parking lots (it used to be where the supermarket was) and then take a short shuttle bus to town. if you stay out towards the out-and-back, then you can take the back road into lp in the morning. the climb will seem a lot easier in a car than later in the day. i believe that rates drop considerably if you stay out by the jays.
KC,
You are in a tough spot. This sport is expensive for one person, but to bring a family, I can only imagine!! Always just been myself and my wife.
I would probably want my family to stay in LP so they could always go back to the house/hotel during the race. It is such a long day for spectators and trying to do anyhting by car will be tough for them. My parents tried it one year by staying in Keene and sat in traffic all day!
The downside is obviously the cost and actually being able to find a place. I would spend the money and make it easy on them, and you as you will not need any extra stress. Some places usually come avaliable in the last few weeks leading up to the race as people decide they can’t make it, so check here often. I found a hotel for IM MOO last year on hear in the last week and it worked out great.
Such a fun, but expensive sport…
If you are going to stay anywhere outside of Lake Placid make sure it is on the North side (towards Saranac Lake). The race course basically shuts down anything south of Lake Placid. A few years ago I stayed at the College in Saranac Lake and it was OK. The beds weren’t great so I would make sure I bought along an air mattress and pillows. It was pretty cheap as well.
It is tough finding something this late. There are normally a bunch of things that come up a bit closer to the race as people drop out. I would check out www.trirudy.com from time to time as the Ottawa community is normally well represented in LP and there are postings from time to time of people looking to unload accomodations.
Good Luck.
I stayed towards wilmington in 2005. We found a nice cabin/house for the weekend. It was a quick easy drive into town- the road is open on that side before the race, but would be closed later. If everyone going with you is going to stay in town all day while you race, you’re fine. It was good to be able to get away from the action in the days leading up.
Parking on race day wasn’t bad. Again, as long as you get in early (which you would be if you’re racing), and stay, you’re fine.
My family brought chairs, layers of clothes, cooler of food, and ‘camped’ in LP for the day. They went out to lunch, went shopping, etc, and enjoyed the day in LP.
I’ll try to find the name of the woman we worked with- they were very friendly, reasonable, and helpful.
I googled and came up with this: http://nyvacationrentals.com/browse.asp?townid=68
For the price, and what we got, the short drive was well worth it.
