I know it’s last-minute, but any of you who have done the Lake Arrowhead Tri, is it worth doing? And if so, where is a good place to stay? Everything seems to be booked out. Camping is an option, but which campground should I go for?
Will my wife and daughter be able to hang on the beach of the lake while I race?
I have done it the last several years primarily because it is in my backyard/lake. It is well organized and appears to be growing. Unlike in in years past the lake is full and the swim exit will be MUCH improved.
The lake is clear and warm even if the swim is short but you will forget about the swim as soon as you exit the water and have to run up the yacht club diveway. The ride has some solid climbs and is interesting. The run is about as flat as you can make it being that you are at a mountain resort. The air is clean even if there isn’t much of it at 5200 ft.
Your wife and kids should be able to hangout on the Resort beach. If not have them pull up a chair at the yacht club and if anyone asks just tell them that you are with me… seriously.
Try looking here for somewhere to stay.

Loved that race last year… I won my AG. We stayed at the resort. The swim is straight into the sun, so it’s hard to sight - just swim into the sun. Tough run out of the lake to T1. One wicked right turn on the bike - watch your speed. Can get a little tight riding back to the resort. You’re sharing the road with cars and they don’t know what’s going on. A very well run race and I wish I was doing it again. A relative is getting married - hafta go.
I’ve done the race both previous years, and I’ll be there Saturday.
Pay close attention during the first 2 minutes of the bike ride. There will be an early example of the “steep downhill into a tight right turn” kinda thing that will be repeated a few more times during the ride.
Other than staying at the resort, be aware that San Bernardino hotels will be less than one hour away.
Thanks everyone. I’ll check it out. Might see you there on Saturday.
Oh, Ron, thanks for that offer. We might take you up on that.
Please do.
Okay, guys, unable to find accomodation up there, so I think I’m going to do the drive in the morning. Anyone have a gauge on how long it’s going to take me from San Clemente to the race site? I know registration opens at 5:30am.
From San Clemente I’d leave myself at least 1.5 hours. You shouldn’t hit any traffic so you should be able to slightly exceed the posted limit. Once you get on to Hwy. 18 you have about 20 miles of mountain driving to the resort.
See you there,
Gary Mc
Thanks Gary. I’m thinking a 4-4:15am departure should be fine. That would get me there by 5:30 and give me a little cushion just in case.
