I did the race last year and you will love it. Great race.
As for the Tiger’s back it’s not that bad. It is a series of about 3 short sharp climbs that are one after the other if I remember correctly. After finishing each climb you have a short downhill before the next one.
The climbs are fairly steep so don’t push too hard up them, especially the first one as you will have a couple more to quickly go over. The only problem I had was trying to avoid people that were zig zagging across the climbs!
As for hydration I took 2 small bottles for the bike and the aid stations had ample supply on the run. Beware though as the heat was pretty intense on the run.
Wish I was, but can’t afford to go back this year.
Hoping to go back in 2007 and race there again. It’s an experience you won’t ever forget.
Are you staying at the Laguna Phuket resort? If you are you will love it. It’s an amazing place. The surrounding’s and scenery are absolutely stunning.
Tiger’s back is like the humps on a cat’s back: There are several “humps” that are short, steep and ugly. The first one is likely the worst, not far from the exit of the resort itself after two left turns. I truly recommend either a 39/25 or 34/25. By anyone’s standards, it is a hard hill.
Another feature of Tiger’s back is a steep, dangerous descent going into an insanely narrw and off-camber right hand 90 degree turn. The race is neutral on this descent: no passing. And there are a number of marshalls there to insure you maintain a reasonable descent speed. check your brake pads before you leave. Patong Bike Shop is there at Laguna Phuket and they do an excellent job.
The run is an absolute furnace, or has the potential to be. One section along the golf course is the hottest run section I have ever done, hotter than the Sahara. Depending on how the course is administered this year you may be kicked down onto the beach for the final 3/4 mile of the run. It is breathtaking. Like something from a movie.
Be sure to grab a $20 dinner on the beach. You’ll be glad you went to this race. It will be with you when you are old. This is one of those wonderful, beautiful experiences you will remember when you are old. Absolutely enchanting. Good decision to go.
Hey Praks, My wife and I signed up for the race after reading Tom’s review a few months ago. We’re staying at the Allamanda. I hope to get to meet some of y’all at the race.
