Ladies: Can't I just wear my Oakley watch to work?

So, I got a new job…I will now have to dress nice, do my hair, and even(gag) wear makeup…my non-athlete friends all say I can no longer wear my blue Oakley watch everyday…but have to get a nice watch. I really don’t want to.

For those of you who have jobs where you have to be semi-fancy at work…do you still wear your sports watch?

Except for sleep and showers I never take it off…I love my watch… and the tan line reflects that.

What do ya think?

No, no, no. Your friends are incorrect. Wear the Oakley … I think it would make a nice contrast when you otherwise dress “well.” It will stand out, in a good way.

Well, If I recall correctly, former President Bill Clinton frequently wore a Timex Ironman 100 Lap watch while in office and while wearing a suit.

I’m supposed to dress nice at work as well but I wear my nike watch all the time. No one at work seems to care, only my boyfriend - who bought me a nice watch as a gift.

Yes…but a) he was the leader of the free world and b) he was a guy…can get away with a lot more…like bad hair and bad dressing.

I will remember that though if I get cracks…

I just have zero fashion sense when it comes to work clothing…I am used to wearing jeans everyday and hair in a pony tail.

yes, but only because it is easy to clean…

resist the pressures of these naysayers! i wear my sports watch (and it’s not even a fancy one) to weddings and other dress-up occasions. and someone just passed me a compliment that a few people i know were giving me compliments behind my back and saying what a “strong sense of self” i have.

I wear my 720i 24x7. Yes, i have to wear nice clothes to work.

Wear the sports watch! I don’t think it’s an issue, either for guys or ladies. Sometimes in business meeting it will trigger a discussion with another person who turns out to also be a runner or triathlete…

Plus a well-dressed woman with a sporty touch…now that’s a turn-on

Wear what you want. Chances are that will all the corporate clothes, nice hair, and make-up, you probably won’t feel much like yourself. So, at least wear the one thing that reminds you that you are an athlete.

I am wearing my Timex Ironman watch with my suit and heels today. I do it every day. Plus, I think my watch tan is way more offensive than the watch itself.

I like to wear a nice watch with nice clothes. Having said that, I wouldn’t downgrade anyone that wore a sports watch with nice clothes.

suit? oh you poor thing!! :frowning:

exactly…I want to still retain some of “me” and by still wearing the 3 year old faded blue Oakley watch I have a reminder…when I mentioned to my new boss that I was a triathlete she said…“Oh, wow…I think we have A PERSON who did a marathon once.”

So, not too many athletes at the new gig.

All good thoughts…thanks for the reassurance.

Me too (not the suit and heels though). Skirts or dresses, never nylons. Always the Timex IM watch. Sometimes jeans. And that’s an old school law firm.

I wore a banged-up Timex Ironman watch along with suit and hose when I interned on Capital Hill in the early 90s. As long as you’re otherwise neat and properly accessorized, a sports watch is one of those ways you can show a bit of personality in business dress.

I wear my Polar every single day…in fact, the only occasions I’ve not worn my watch have been black tie functions. I’ve had many clients and colleagues question me abt it. It’s a great conversation piece!

Rock that Oakley!

As my mom would say, time for a hair cut and real job. Keep the watch it shows you are still an individual.

I wear my 720i 24x7. Yes, i have to wear nice clothes to work.

Me too, I used to change it when I went out to “dressy” functions, but now I don’t bother. The thing looks huge on my wrist, I just forget it’s there and am surprised from time to time when I get comments, either “hey, that’s like one of those heartrate things, isn’t it? What sport do you do?”, or from girls I have had quite a few times “hey, I like your watch, really retro looking. What’s the big red button?”

But I’m a guy and it might be different from a girl. In fact, now that I don’t think I’d worry (as a guy) to wear it with a suit for a new job, but I might think twice about for interviews. Maybe don’t wear a watch for a few days until you’ve met most people then just throw it on and happily accept any comments.

I think it depends on what kind of job it is. Remember most people out there aren’t like the people on this forum. Wearing a sport watch may not be a big deal to us, but it may be to a 55yo blueblood whose multimillion dollar investment you are trying to secure. Why don’t you just leave a fancy watch at work and if you have a big meeting with clients, wear it for a couple of hours, then switch back to your Oakley.

i prefer a nice watch, but a friend of mine always wears her ironman watch and it never ever looks out of place. it’s cool actually…she’s always in heels, suit, the works, with her sports watch. you can make it work, it’s really no big deal…unless of course the watch you wear is hideous…

but i have to add that it’s important to consider overall style. if you’re all glamed up in expensive suits and heels, a sports watch could look all wrong and out of place. now if you prefer more casual suits that are straigh forward and not necessarily high fashion, then your watch could be absolutely fine.
