OK, so I’ve been pretty good about giving my girlfriend some pretty nice handbags over the years. She won’t buy them for herself (too thrifty), even though she loves them (she knows them all and can spot fakes from a mile away). Heard about this place:
Q for the slowtwitch ladies…'specially the ones who like bags…what do you think of this? Would you rather have one pricey new bag a year, or a subscription to this service?
Sorry I’m not a lady (why am I apologizing for this?) but I LOVE to bag shop for my wife. I strongly recommend your buying the bag for her – it shows you gave it some thought and tells her you have style (assuming you pick the right bag). Let me know if you need a partner to shop. I promise I won’t hold your hand, tempted as I may be.
Actually, this Christmas is going to be a jewelry Christmas, but birthday isn’t far away. I’m thinking longer term here. Last year was a Gucci bag, she’s still carrying that quite a bit, although the matching Coach bag and scarf from two or three years ago have made a comeback of late. Budget? I dunno.
I am a major hand bag addict. I love them. This is an interesting concept. However, I’m far to attached to my bags to give them back. I can’t see spending $175/month to borrow a LV or Gucci bag. I’d rather buy it and keep it rather than switching it out for another one. I guess it makes sense if you want to have a large variety of bags at your disposal, personally I’d rather build my own collection slowly. If you choose wisely a quality bag will not go out of style.
no offense but you’ve bought her two bags in the past … and you want to get another one? I think if you gf just wants to show off the borrow thing works but if she’s into a particular designer/style she might want the latest and greatest…
I’ve bought quite a few very expensive handbags for my wife over the years, and since we travel to the far east quite a bit, we’ve also had exposure to the knock-off market. It is very difficult to tell the fakes from the authentic, and virtually impossible if you are not actually handling the bag. Yeah there are bad fakes that are easy to spot, but the good ones are identical in look to the real thing…right down to the packaging…and sell for maybe 10% of the authentic costs. All the easy “give aways” are well known and avoided. Same goes with watches by the way.
As for Bag, Borrow, or Steal, I looked at it pretty closely but decided it was too expensive and the selection not broad enough. By the time you rent one of the bags for a year you could pretty much buy it. And owning it allows you to resell if you want.
I’m with KEJ…I have 4 bags which are pricey and honestly will never go out of style. Two are Kate Spade, one is Ralph Lauren, Polo and the most recent Tylie Malibu. All of them were around $300 and worth it, as I don’t buy a new bag every 6 months!!!
i’m a handbag girl, and buy at least one every season. i would prefer a great handbag to make my own, as opposed to this program. to me this program is about trying to make yourself look like something that you’re not. plus, by the time you pay membership, with all of the costs in shipping, seems like it would add up quite nicely. in fact, i think it’s a rip off.
why don’t you just buy her a bag now and then get her one for spring so she’ll have something for spring and summer? it would probably all come out the same, if not less expensive. plus, things happen to bags–an ink pen will get an ink dot on the lining or something. before you know it, they could nickel and dime you for “damages” that are really just normal wear and tear.
part of their selling point is saying that the bags quickly fall out of trend. i disagree. signature fabrics, etc, never go out of design. and bags that are bought with good taste become highly prized through time.
if you want her to feel special–buy her a handbag. don’t rent her one.
They just had this in the SF paper yesterday or the weekend. The problem is, for the really cool, new, not bags, you have a very long waiting list, so if you need it NOW, sorry.

Tylie Malibu? I’ve never even heard of that. See, I’m stuck in Indianapolis and we don’t have as many choices. That is one reason that bag site seemed interesting. I’ve bought her three bags in 5 or 6 years. One was a black Kate Spade “Sam”. She really liked that but I haven’t seen her use it in a couple years, or at least since I got her the Coach. The Sam, I thought, was simple and sort of timeless. At that time, I saw a lot of women carrying Kate Spade, although they don’t seem as common now (I mostly see women in this area carrying fake Vuitton and Coach). The Coach bag was easy, because we have a Coach store. The Gucci was harder – it’s a classic style, very nice. We have Saks, Nordstrom’s, a few other places where I can go look. I suspect we are 2-3 years behind the coasts here in corn country.
I know Nordstroms here in San Diego carries Tylie, so maybe ask them! Tylie is highly fashionable and a little more hip than the classic gucci or coach! She also makes AMAZING belts and I recently ordered myself a bracelett cuff! Very cool!! I think she’d be impressed with your cutting edge taste!
Kerri, have you heard of jana feifer bags? My fashionista friend from LA gave me one last Christmas. I believe that jana is a friend of hers. It’s a white velvet hobo with silver stuff and totally not my style… I need to ebay it.
no, I haven’t but just did a quick search! Not really my style either!!
Come on, I have one of their transition bags. Everyone knows when PB is in the room.
