Lacking motivation

so i did ironman nz about 2 months ago, had a month off, and have just eased back into training in the last 4 or so weeks. longest bike ride has been 2.5 hours.

i’ve been finding myself slacking though. last 2 mornings i havent bothered to train and i skipped training last night. i’ve been doing this pretty regularly it seems.

anyone got any tips on how to keep motivated? i got a half marathon run in about 2 weeks.

find a new route to bike or run. If I get bored with the same old routes, I pull out a map and try and find a new route. A cool thing to do is find a running trail that you can bike to and from. Just take some extra food or cash for when you get lost.

Do you train alone or with partners/groups. If you train alone maybe get a workout partner or go with a group. this might change things up enough to keep things fresh.

yeah im gonna do a sunday group ride from now on. it is moving into winter here so its dark at nite when i go for runs…

Try taking 2-3 wks off and do absolutely nothing. Yes, absolutely nothing. No biking, running or swimming.

Your body will start to to tell you that it’s time to start again and your motivation will come back.

Are you prone to Seasonal Affected Disorder (SAD)?

I know I tend to get depressed in the late fall/early stages of winter when the days are getting short. etc. Worst time of the year for me and I’m at my least productive. Once the snow arrives and I can start x-skiing I bounce back, but I’m still at my best in the warm weather months.

i dunno.

If you’re at all competitive, that half mara will get yer juices going again. You might do horribly, in which case you’ll get all fired up about how to improve it. Or you might kick butt and do better than you expected, in which case you’ll get a nice high that you can ride for a while.

Being a girl, I have a trick, I don’t know if it would work for you boys: whenever I am feeling unmotivated I buy a new toy/piece of clothing/gadget/runners/etc, and then I want to try it out, so I get out there and get training that way.

Set a goal and get going.

Quit.

Just stop training. Put your bike somewhere out of the way. Spend a few extra hours at work every week. Learn how to windsurf. Find a nice girl, spend time with her.

Seriously - after a few months off you’ll probably be more motivated than ever.

This is pretty common after an IM apparently. Could be that your body is tired and not recovered. Gordo has a really good article on his site on IM recovery and recommends staying away from intensity until you know you are recovered.

I like the idea of learning to windsurf although that could be a worse bug than triathlon.

This might not help you much right now, being fairly far away from IMNZ, but hat helped me last year after IMLP was having Timberman 1/2 scheduled four weeks after LP. I did this on a whim about a month before LP when another 100 or so spots were granted to Timberman, and I thought it might be stupid because maybe LP (my first IM) would just trash me. But I recovered well from it - really well - and having my focus on Timberman gave me no room for a big letdown. I am hardly bionic, and at 55 at the time I somehow had enough left over after LP to train moderately diligently and pull off Timberman in 5:30, with no adverse effects afterward. I know it’s a risk to schedule a big race so soon after an IM, and I might’ve been just as well off scheduling a deceny oly or int instead. But I’m glad I did it the way it was done. I hope your motivation returns much sooner than later!
