I’ve been dealing with chronic hip pain for two years after a mtb crash and my orthopedist thinks I have a labral tear. He says I need a hip arthrogram to prove it, and given the trauma of that, might as well just have the hip scoped.
I live in Temecula California and am looking for a really good hip specialiast. I could go to San Diego, OC or LA.
Thanks for the help

You need to talk to Dr Brent Kay (tell him I referred you)
Brent is a hip expert, a cyclist, Ironman, and is Floyd Landis’ doctor
He is right in town: 27450 Ynez Rd Suite 128 Temecula, CA 92591

Get a more accurate diagnosis via MRI arthrogram and take your time researching both the hip arthroscopy procedure and the MD to perform it if you eventually opt for this treatment course. There are no sports med practitioners in SD county who have done more than a few hip arthroscopies as they are relatively new procedures. You will need to travel to find an expert.
As always, ask your surgeon how many of procedure X he/she has performed. If the number is less than 200 I would really have to have a compelling reason not to go elsewhere. I’m an anesthesiologist and have watched both high volume and low volume surgeons do these - trust me, high volume is always better. If you wish, I can query my sports med docs to get the names of a few experts.
Gary,
Thanks for the referral. I’ll be sure to mention your name. Nice to know there is that kind of expertise close to home.
I’ve been doing sprint and olympic tri’s for a few years now. Since your local, do you know if there are any tri clubs or group work-outs going on in town. It has sure been hard for me to get motivated on my own with the injury and being winter and all.
Thanks,
Barratt
Thanks for your opinion. I’m a physician myself (ophthalmology), and although I don’t get to watch any hip surgeries, there is definitly some truth with a newer procedure, in finding a surgeon with a few under their belt. Do you practice in San Diego? If you wouldn’t mind asking some of contacts about who is doing these, I would much appreciate it.

I’m asking the orthopods for the Padres - I’ll pm you with the info.
Good Luck!
