LA Tri Series #3 Race Report and a prayer to St Khai

After missing #2 in the series it was back to Bonelli today for #3, an Olympic distance race and on a course I’ve actually racced on before so a good chance of actually not getting lost which is something of a novelty at Bonelli. I managed to nearly get lost getting into the parking lot though which wasn’t a good start.

Was there nice and early, got a decent rack spot near the bike exit which was what I wanted, picked up the number and chip then into another huge line for the t-shirt and swim cap. Still got back to transistion in plenty of time, particularly since it was announced that the start would be delayed by 15 minutes due to all the people still in the lines to collect their stuff. Talked to raceforlv for a bit, met longboarder, messed around setting my stuff up for a bit longer then off to the swim start.

Put my wetsuit on crooked, sorted it out, did a quick warm up then wait for the start, I’m in wave 1 which is always good. Eventually we’re off and my swimming isn’t going too well. For some reason, and despite the fact that I’m barely kicking, my quads want to cramp (never had this before…maybe I should have been swimming more than once a week or tended to my hydration and recovery better this week). Eventually end up in no-man’s land, missed the front pack and there’s nobody around me, keep plodding along for what seems like forever until a couple of people from the next wave pass me, something else that I don’t remember happening before. Finally get to the beach and out of the water in 28 or something, 5 minutes slower than last time I raced this course. Talking to some people afterwards, most of them thought that the swim was long but it still sucked. I’m going to have to start getting out of bed in the morning and actually going to masters again.

Reasonable transition despite having to fend off various leg and foot muscles that wanted to cramp and off on the bike. Decided to go as hard as I could and worry about the run later. Dodging the construction work where they’d dug up the road and the express race people was interesting but managed to keep out of trouble. It was much less windy than 2 months ago which made the fast descents easier. Always surprised by how many hills there are at Bonelli, when they built the place they obviously didn’t like the idea of putting in any flat roads or trails…either that or Monty refused to use them when he devised the course. My quads were still hurting but I kept pushing and I think my bike split was 1:09 or 1:10 which was not great but an improvement over my previous bonelli outings.

Another quick(ish) transition and it’s time for the infamous bonelli run course. Today it was all really well marked and they had volunteers in the most confusing areas so hopefully nobody got lost. My legs didn’t want to play to start with and then my race belt decided to disintegrate. Picked it up and stuffed it down my trisuit. Got passed by several people in the first mile then gradually got going, worked it up the hills, let gravity have its way with me on the way down and try to save a bit for the last mile. Eventually I hit a point where I can remember how far it is to the finish and take off. I think I got nearly everyone who’d passed me earlier back and maybe one or two others. Roll over the line with maybe a 42-43 minute run for a 2:24:53 which is a course and distance PR for me. Then stagger over to the grill for a very welcome cheseburger which tasted great.

Pleased with the PR, thinking I maybe left 5 minutes out there with the swim and its after effects. Looks like I placed 4th in my AG when they posted the results so no medal. Waiting to see the official splits as I wasn’t tracking mine too well, I’m hoping that my bike placing has improved a lot as I’ve really been working on that.

As an aside, I’ve never seen so many crashes, people at the side of the road with flats or mechanicals or riders rolling up to the dismount line and then promptly falling over.

And now to St Khai, the patron saint of dumbassery. I’m doing another race tomorrow and I’m already sore. Fortunately it’s a sprint but I’m hoping that invoking the spirit of St Khai will allow me to be able to walk afterwards

Hey - congrats!

I got to the race late (as usual) and was stoked that it was moved back (as usual). That’s why I love to race there!

Anyway, the swim seemed a bit long to me - but not that much. My split was pretty much where it should have been ± 1 min. It felt long when I started to heat up in that warm water!

What I’d love to know is how short the run was! Did you (or anyone) have a Garmin on it? I was hoping it was correct or even long because they seemed to place the run turn SO far out at the end but if that’s the case then I cut about 5 mins of my 10k…so I’m thinking the run was short. I’m pretty sure I had a run PR of some sort - my question is … how stoked should I be?

T.

Yeah, the water was kinda warm. I can’t really blame my leg issues on that as they started straight away.

I don’t wear a garmin for races due to the lack of waterproofness so I didn’t measure the course. It was the same turnaround as the BOD last september though to the best of my recollection so it’s consistent. I have no reason to think it’s short from my split but it could be.

Cheers

Congrats on your fine showing! Don’t worry about the two races in two days, you’ll be fine. Try not to think about the soreness. You definitely won’t notice it, and it won’t be a factor, once tomorrow’s race starts. I have had great luck so far this season on the back-to-back racing plan. It was Paulo’s idea originally, as a way of maximizing training load. I remember he told me, “Muffin Top, if I could have you race every day I would. Make sure you take the bike out hard.”

Make these bike workouts useful mate
.

Oui, merci beaucoup mon ami.

Sounds slow but it’s a slow course. They bundle the transistions into the bike split but the best last september was 1:10 give or take a second, Julie Swail went 1:11 (I went 1:23). So this was a definite improvement, I’m awaiting the splits with interest.

Now I just need to finish moving apartments so I can train again and actually include some swimming in the mix.

Thanks! Tomorrow’s race is really screwy distance wise…half mile swim, 6 mile bike, 2 mile run. I’ll be fine

Ben
Good job on the PR! Sounds like you need to work on the swim so you get a medal next time. Nice to meet you and raceforlv today. Have fun tomorrow.

Todd
That is the same run as the last three years I’ve raced there. I did not wear a Garmin but I think the distance is somewhat correct. Anyway, enjoy your PR.

Wow, look at you a 2:24. That is a very solid and respectable time on that course. I felt the swim was long as well, as for the run my polar which usually measures long by a bit had it at 6.06 miles. For reference it has measured in the 13.9 plus or minus (less than a tenth) range for plain old running 1/2 mary’s. That is a solid bike split for Bonelli as well. Nice race, hope to see you there in Sept.

Yea, what was the story on the 3 crashed on Puddingstone and the at least 8 flats I saw. Great weather for a race though.

It was nice to see some st people for the first time. How did it go Bob, hopefully no detours for Stacy right?

Don
Stacy and I both had fun races. Stacy is working up to her first 70.3 this summer and I’m just getting back into shape. We were slow but had a great time. No problems for Stacy…for a change. It was great to meet you and Ben. Our next race is Camp P. At this point I’m doing Camp P oly and sprint, Pacific Coast and Bonelli in September. A **BIG **maybe a 70.3.

PS: How did it go for you?

Hey - thanks for the Garmin reading…one of these days I’ll actually buy my own and not have to ask everyone else.

I don’t know about three crashes but I was speaking with the Lifeguards after the event (begging for sunscreen as I baked in the sun waiting for them to straighten out results) and they said all that they had (even with the construction) was one guy go down on the bike (I know, one too many) with a dislocated shoulder. Surprising that was all because I heard the bike in/out/lap repeat section was pretty sketchy at points.

On the eight flats - I saw two large piles of glass that I rode through on my first lap - one during beginning of the large downhill and one on the winding uphill after you make the right following the long downhill. Always a bummer to see that.

Todd

good job just take your wife to the pool and try to catch her and your swim times will go up just make sure you circle swim with her do not split a lane LOL good luck on 2nd race
.

noooo! she runs me over when we do that, it’s no fun getting lapped every 200-300 yards :frowning:

at least she did not almost break your nose.lol how was the sprint?

Good, thanks. Took more than 5 minutes off last year’s time and took 3rd in M30-34, my first triathlon podium

I didn’t quite make my time target (sub 50 mins) by 9 seconds but that’s probably due to yesterday’s race, had a better swim than yesterday but the running legs weren’t quite there. The race report would go: swan hard (half a mile), made a draft then decided to try to jump to the next one and didn’t quite make it, long run to transition, biked hard (6 whole miles) then run as hard as legs would allow, calf nearly cramping for first half mile (2 miles). Finish. It’s funny, I’m not a big fan of ocean swimming but I go much better than I do in lakes

Wifey took 4th in her AG for a medal and we both also got lucky in the raflle (another first) so came home with a hydrotail and a transition pack.

So a good day overall and a good weekend. I might stick to one race per weekend for the rest of the year though

I heard a scream going up the hill to where you cross the freeway on my second lap. When I got there 2 riders and bikes were on the ground tangled in each other and there was another guy on the ground 20 yards behind them. They didn’t look like the type of riders who would have been going quickly up the hill so probably a weaving, swerving collision type crash. Heard about people turning round and riding the wrong way when missing the bike in (which was clearly signposted this year). I also saw with my own eyes two women fall over at the bike dismount line.

I saw the glass on the winding uphill, I missed the stuff on the large downhill but I don’t think I was anywhere near the shoulder there on any of the laps as I was always overtakinf people there.

Great to meet you too, I’m signed up for the Pendelton oly and will likely race bonelli in september so see you then!
