LA has been in New Zealand for a few days. He rode with several notable kiwi tri and cycling personalities yesterday. Today there was an open invitation to join him on a ride in Auckland this morning. I don’t know how many turned up as I wasn’t there (even thou it was mostly on my standard morning ride route).
Unsruprisingly he got mentioned on the 6pm news last night. Most people declined to be interviewed, but Rick Wells essentially defended him, saying he was a drug cheat, not an axe murderer. To some extent, he is right, but even as a past fanboy, I wasn’t tempted to join him for the ride. Besides, there was probably several hundred cyclists there. Not like I was gunna have him to myself to chat over beer and pizza. At best all I could expect would be to see his ass disappearing up the road. I’ve seen far too many asses disappear up the road, so I slept in.
Did anyone here go for the ride with him? I heard he was brought her by Lion Breweries? Any truth to that? does he still have needle marks in his arms? I only saw one photo of him and he appeared to be on a Cannondale. What was he riding?

Not a LA fan, he’s probably a sociopath or something, he’s fully deserving of his fall from grace, but like you said he’s not an axe murderer. I wouldn’t have a problem going for a ride with him or having a beer with him, he’d probably be a good lad to go out on the piss with. I wouldn’t leave my wife alone with him though.

My wife and Lance alone together? I reckon my wife could take him. A) She’s bigger than him B) she claims she “knew” he was a doper all along C) she’s feisty, and reckon she could take him if she got riled up

He does well to still draw a big crowd though, he’s not exactly become a pariah like some drug cheats. Poor old Ben Johnson, people wouldn’t have pissed on him if he was on fire…

How dare LA use drugs like everyone else who wanted to win something in European cycling, and how dare the UCI not tell naive fans that drug use was the norm in pro cycling for a hundred and thirty years. The UCI also didn’t tell the gullible there is no Easter Bunny, Santa Claus, or Tooth Fairy. I guess they figured grown-ups could see the obvious.

The argument has been done to death, but there was a fundamental difference between LA and a lot of the other dopers, he’s a sociopathic, pathological liar that screwed over anyone that crossed his path. He’s not an axe murderer, but he’s not a good person. Most of the dopers out there wouldn’t have done half the shit he’s done.
I’m open to LA participating again in organized events. If he asked to join an already planned and popular event that’s one thing. At least several hundred people showing up to ride with LA 24 hours after he sent a tweet? I think that’s pathetic. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/...mp;objectid=11770026
Yesterday appears to have been LA riding with cycling royalty here in Auckland. That wasn’t publicized as far as I know. Invitation only.
todays ride was publicized and an open invitation spread through the cycling world here. That was publicized only 2 days in advance.
From what I’ve heard, the swarm was 500-2000 roadies all trying to get to the front of the peloton to get selfies. A colleague was there and managed a few good shots.
I’m no longer a fanboy, and even more important, I had no interest in riding with 500 people I don’t know, all more intent on Lance, than behaving properly in a bunch. I’ll just watch it on the news tonight

Are they running a new reality TV event in NZ with your wife beating up on Lance? Can she one up Betsy?

I’ve heard that he will be part of the next ad campaign for one of the two large local breweries.
I just hope he doesn’t become a parody of himself like Tonya Harding or Danny Bonaducci (sp?) from Partridge Family back in the day.
A lot of people doped but how many sent out lawyers to harass and destroy anyone who suggested they did dope? How many hung out to dry their teammates many times when they tried to come clean. How many tried to destroy the careers of other athletes who had the nerve to question his performances or associations? Ben Johnson sure did not, he was just a guy from Jamaica who probably didn’t even finish high school who likely was not running the show.
