L.A. Triathlon in September

I noticed in their website (http://www.latriathlon.com/registration.html) they have a new race called the Elite Olympic Age Group Competition. It costs more than the regular AG race. I couldn’t find information about it anywhere else on the website, so I emailed them and received this response:

“Basically the Elite Age Group division is a separate division. It’s
for those who don’t feel that they are at the professional level, but
usually win or finish near the top of their age group.
We will have awards for the elite age group category just like we do
for the regular age group category. I hope this makes more sense.”

Does anyone think this is just really weird? If you’re capable of placing, it’d be a roll of the dice if your competition is going to pay the extra ‘elite AG’ bucks or not. I don’t know… that race has gotten too expensive for me, anyway. I guess I shouldn’t worry about it.

What I want to know is why does the “Elite Age Group” cost more then the others? I’m racing the same course right? Please help me understand…

Wish I could. Maybe the medals are bigger.
