Does anyone have any thoughts on the Kurt Kinetic Trainer? Is it accurate as a power meter?
I have it, I doubt it.
GREAT trainer, but I wouldn’t rely on the numbers too much for the computer. I actually stopped using the computer.
I can’t speak to its accuracy firsthand, since I don’t have any other powermeter to compare it with. But, here is an article that compares the power output against an srm: http://www.pezcyclingnews.com/default.asp?pg=fullstory&id=4569
Accurate no, consistent yes. Consistency is all you need if this is your only way of training with power. It is worthless for comparing #s (either between a real PM or for bragging) but if you want a low-cost way to train using power it will work.
I used their power computer for two years, but have since moved on. Their power computer calculates watts from speed and from the trainer’s resistance profille. It doesn’t measure watts, this is a critical difference. If you want consistency you need to have everything the same every time you ride: same tire pressure, same tension on the trainer, etc… Works best if you have a bike dedicated to the trainer.
There are a couple threads on this if you use the search function.
PS
here is a posting I made on another forum…

I’ve used the Kurt power thing while riding on the trainer with my SRM. As long as I do steady efforts and have the same wheel circumference in both, the power readings are very close. Where it isn’t good, is for short efforts where it takes some time for the wheel speed to catch up to the amount of force you are placing on the pedals. Forget about sprint workouts and microbursts. It’s great for tempo and endurance workouts. If you are also using a heart rate monitor, you could get a close approximation of your threshold. If you want to save $50 and don’t care about your numbers, you could just take note of which gear you are in and use perceived exertion and heart rate to gage your workout.
